Oceanside - “Wound Care Facility of the Year” is the latest distinction earned by

the Center for Wound Care & Hyperbaric Medicine at Tri-City Medical Center .

The Center won the award at the 7th Annual International Symposium for

Hyperbaric Oxygen and the Future of Healing on July 24th in Irvine , CA .

The educational symposium attracts Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)

physicians and medical practitioners from around the globe and recognizes

organizations and individuals who have demonstrated contributions and

accomplishments in the field of HBOT “above and beyond expectations.”

“Tri-City’s Wound Care Center has consistently maintained a 94% healing rate

since opening its doors in 2008,” said Dr. Paul Haydu, Medical Director of the

Center for Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine at Tri-City Medical Center .

Every nine and a half minutes, someone in the United States is infected with HIV, and one out of every five of these individuals doesn't know it, but they are responsible for more than half of all new sexually transmitted HIV infections, according to CDC estimates. Since individuals are most infectious to others shortly after infection, detecting HIV earlier is critical and life saving. A significant percentage of new HIV infections are transmitted by someone with an undetected acute infection, so identifying more people earlier offers a significant opportunity for counseling, which can reduce high-risk behaviors and also initiate antiretroviral treatment for early-stage infection, if appropriate. Because individuals known to be HIV-positive are more likely to take appropriate action to prevent infecting their partners, detecting this infection in asymptomatic individuals is a worthwhile goal.

Mollen Immunization Clinics will Administer Flu Vaccination Program

One of the many things that your Chamber does for you as a member is research, to figure out what the many State and local propositions mean to you as a business person. The Chamber Board of Directors reviews the research and any expressed opinions of Chamber members and officially determines what position the chamber should take on each relevant proposition at each election.

The Public Policy Committee of the Chamber actually researches the background on each proposition that would affect the business community. The Committee tries to hear all sides of the story, which at times can be a daunting task. This year, the Chamber has found a great resource for its research. Shaun Lumachi with Chamber Advocacy provides unbiased research and background information from multiple perspectives. Shawn provided our Chamber with this information for the June ballot measures.

At the September 2nd, 2010 joint meeting of our Public Policy committee and the Vista Chamber Governmental Affairs Committee, he will address Propositions 19 through 27 from the November ballot. He will provide a summary of each proposition, background information, arguments in support, arguments in opposition, and lists of organizations that have come out in support or opposition to each measure.

Carbon monoxide, or CO, is an odorless and colorless gas that is toxic to humans and animals. Because humans cannot detect CO with their senses, it can kill you before you are aware. · Install at least one CO alarm with an audible warning alarm neat the sleeping areas of your home. Ensure the alarm has been evaluated by a recognized laboratory, such as the Underwriters Laboratories (UL).

· Never use a charcoal grill, hibachi, or a power generator in an enclosed space, like a garage. Even if the door is open, the CO may not properly ventilate.

MiraCosta College Faculty to Speak on Environmental Issues

MiraCosta College and the San Diego County Library have teamed up to present “From the Water to the Stars and In Between: MiraCosta College Night at the Library,” a speakers series featuring college faculty addressing a variety of environmental topics. The first lecture will be held Saturday, August 28, 3 p.m. at the Solana Beach Library, located at 157 Stevens Avenue, and the featured presenter will be MiraCosta geography instructor Bruce St. Gean, who will address the topic, “Coastal Lagoons and Estuaries.” St. Gean will expound on the coastal features and landforms along the North San Diego County coastline.

Other speakers in the series are:

· Jonathan Cole, MiraCosta physics instructor, who will discuss “Climate Change,” and will provide an overview of our current understanding of climate science and our options for dealing with it. Cole will speak Thursday, September 9, 6:30 p.m. at the Del Mar Library, located at 1309 Camino Del Mar.

· Rica Sirbaugh French, MiraCosta astronomy instructor, will address the topic, “We’ve Come a Long Way, Baby! Astronomy in the 21^st Century,” a look at what the future holds for space exploration. French’s lecture will be held Tuesday, September 14, 6 p.m. at the Encinitas Library, located at 540 Cornish Drive.

· Bruce Cordell, former MiraCosta astronomy instructor, will discuss “A New Apollo-Style Space Age Within Five Years?” in which he will broach the subject of a resurgence of the space race. This lecture will be held Saturday, September 18, 11 a.m. at the Rancho Santa Fe Library, located at 17040 Avenida de Acacias.

Tax-Prep Assistance Program at MiraCosta College Receives IRS Recognition

MiraCosta accounting students helped more than 600 North County taxpayers get a collective $1.268 million in tax returns, according to representatives from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). At the July 13 meeting of the MiraCosta College Board of Trustees, IRS representatives acknowledged MiraCosta students and college accounting instructor Michael Deschamps for their participation in the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program, which offers free tax help to low- to moderate-income families who cannot prepare their own tax returns.

More than twenty student volunteers from the college helped to prepare income tax returns for low-income taxpayers in the community at two locations in the district this past spring. This often resulted in community members receiving beneficial tax credits that they did not know they were entitled to, which were especially welcome in these trying economic times.

Sponsored by the Internal Revenue Service, the program is available to students who have successfully completed Individual Income Tax (ACCT 145). In order to become certified VITA volunteers, students must also successfully complete nine hours of software training administered by a local IRS coordinator and pass a certification test administered by the IRS. Once certified, students volunteer their time and expertise at tax-assistance sites typically located at community and neighborhood centers, libraries, schools and shopping malls. Most sites also offer free electronic filing.

Life Rolls On (RLO) Founder, Jesse Billauer, speaks to Academy by the Sea Campers About Following Their Dreams

CARLSBAD , Calif. – Camp Pacific/Academy by the Sea (based at the Army and Navy Academy campus in Carlsbad , CA ), combines a recreation, surf and academic program, focusing on teamwork, athletic and recreation skills and building self confidence. With a dedicated surf instruction program, as well as focus on the teachings of diversity and cultural awareness, the summer program encourages young people of all ages and nationalities.

On Thursday 15^th July 2010, Camp Pacific/Academy by the Sea hosted an inspiring presentation by Life Rolls On (LRO) founder Jesse Billauer. Not your conventional surfer, Jesse was left paralyzed at the age of 17 following a surfing accident that found him flying headfirst into a shallow sandbar, severing his spinal cord. He continues to surf today with the help of his friends and a custom made board and through his foundation, helps others with disabilities to ride with him.

Jesse’s visit to the campus served to support the camp’s mission to connect children of different cultures and abilities through positive bonding, support and friendship in a fun and caring environment in order to enable personal development. With 16 different nations represented in the 2010 summer intake alone, Camp Pacific/Academy by the Sea prides itself on providing a unique program that allows children to learn about people from different cultures, backgrounds and beliefs whilst encouraging them to reach their own personal goals and strive to achieve.

Following a video introduction by musician Jason Mraz, Jesse rolled onto stage and the campers were instantly captivated. In Jesse’s cool, laidback, surfer style he told his amazing story to a hushed audience. Jesse detailed his years as a junior surfing champion on his way to the pro tour, the devastating reality of his injuries and the hard months and years since his accident. The message was clear throughout – “visualize your dreams and make them happen” said Jesse as he asked the audience to close their eyes and think about their dreams. “My dreams were to be a pro surfer, star in a movie, graduate college and have a wife and kids one day. After my accident I wasn’t sure that would happen. But with the help of some close friends and belief in myself, I’ve now surfed at a professional event (the US Open), been in a movie called Step into Liquid, graduated college from San Diego State and hopefully am on my way to the last one...I’ll keep you posted!”.

Adam Silverman, a Camp Pacific camper for the past four years who is currently completing his Leaders-in-Training course this summer, found the presentation inspiring. “It was so personal. We’ve had Invisible Children and other great causes we’ve worked with and learnt about at camp but they are so far away. To have this guy come to camp and to actually see him and meet him meant so much more. It was a really unique atmosphere. I think it’s the first time ever this summer the kids were all quiet! He has motivated me to really try and achieve my goals.”

Jesse’s reassurance in light of his accident for the kids to keep on surfing came at a great time in the program, on the eve before the camp’s annual Sunset Surf. This exciting event allows the campers to enjoy the amazing California sunset as they surf with their friends from around the world, hoping to catch a wave with a dolphin or seal, before coming together as a group for the traditional campfire songs on the beach.

Steve Morris, Director of Summer Programs, was delighted with the impact Jesse’s presence had on the campers. “I feel that Jesse’s story provided the kids an opportunity to learn about triumph over tragedy. His positive outlook on life and desire to continue the things that he loves is an inspiration to us all.”

MiraCosta College Accreditation Reaffirmed

The Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC) of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges has recognized the quality education MiraCosta College offers its students by reaffirming the college’s accreditation for six years, the maximum time allowed. The decision concluded a review process that included an extensive Self-Study evaluation by MiraCosta administrators, faculty and staff; a March campus visit by a team of peer evaluators representing ACCJC; and consideration by the Commission at its June meeting.

“We are very pleased the commission recognizes MiraCosta’s high standards and hard work by reaffirming our accreditation,” says MiraCosta Board of Trustees President Gregory M. Post. “The college provides exceptional instruction and support services that allow our students to pursue and achieve their educational goals. Receiving reaffirmation is a high achievement that is a firm nod to the high quality education, job training and services the college offers to the community.”

In the ACCJC evaluation report, the evaluation team commended the college for its:

· Accomplishment in reestablishing a positive and collegial environment.

· Robust, modern information technology infrastructure and its persuasive use throughout the campuses in support of instruction, student services and operations.

· Nationally recognized service learning program that has partnerships with more than 75 nonprofit organizations and public schools, and which supports the participation of more than 1,000 MiraCosta students annually.

· Comprehensive library services and collections.

· Well-integrated and maintained facilities and grounds with a focus on sustainable practices and landscaping that create a cohesive and esthetically pleasant campus environment, and which enhance the college’s learning environment.

“The reaffirmation of accreditation provides an assurance to our students and our community that MiraCosta is committed to educational excellence,” says MiraCosta Academic Senate President Louisa Moon. “Under the leadership of Dr. Rodriguez and with the dedication of the faculty, staff and administration, a collegial atmosphere is flourishing at MiraCosta, allowing the college to focus on meeting student and community needs.”

As part of MiraCosta’s reaffirmation, ACCJC has asked the college to prepare two follow-up reports: one in March, 2011 and another in March, 2012. In the first report, the college will demonstrate the ways in which it is using data-driven, integrated planning in its institutional decision-making. The completion and implementation of the college’s Master Plan, which is currently underway, will be key to this outcome. In the second report, the college will address recommendations concerning student learning outcomes as well as evaluate the efficacy of the new governance structure. All colleges are required to file a Midterm Report in the third year after evaluation (March, 2013), indicating further progress on recommendations, and future goals.

“This is a very proud moment for the college and an affirmation of the high quality of educators we have at the college,” says MiraCosta Superintendent/President Dr. Francisco Rodriguez. “MiraCosta staff and faculty are already hard at work addressing the commission’s recommendations, and I am confident that the college will address these issues satisfactorily and be a better college as a result of it.”

Stater Bros. has raised nearly $500,000 towards the fight against blood cancers

San Bernardino, California (June 16, 2010) – Stater Bros. is partnering with The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society for three weeks in June to raise funds for leukemia, lymphoma and hodgkin’s disease. All 167 Stater Bros. Supermarkets will be conducting this campaign to raise funds for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

Stater Bros.’ customers can participate by purchasing paper balloons for $1 each. The paper balloons are scannable at the register and will be added to the customer’s total bill and shown on the receipt for easy recordkeeping. Customers are welcome to write their name or the name of a loved one on the balloons, which will be displayed inside the store.

This year’s campaign will be the third year for the Stater Bros. and The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society partnership. Last year, Stater Bros. raised over $300,000 for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Stater Bros. also had the largest walk team at The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s annual 2009 “Light The Night” Walk at Angel Stadium of Anaheim , with over 900 walkers.

This year’s campaign will feature two brave Southern California survivors who have fought long and hard against the disease. Cynthia, who was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia at only 22 months old, is now healthy at age six. Five-year-old Alex, who was diagnosed in October 23 of 2008, is currently in treatment for acute lymphoblastic leukemia but is now at the maintenance phase.

Proceeds from the event will fund equipment for the Women’s Diagnostic Center at Tri-City Medical Center

North County Health Services Receives $25,000 Grant From

the Hervey Family Non-endowment Fund at the San Diego Foundation

- North County Health Services (NCHS) recently received a grant from the Hervey Family Nonendowment

Fund at the San Diego Foundation in memory of Sol Price. Sol Price passed away on December 14,

2009 and, in lieu of flowers, the family asked that donations be made to one of 16 organizations, North County

Health Services being one of them. Sol Price and his wife Helen established The Price Family Charitable Fund in

1995 and later set up San Diego Revitalization Corporation which was subsequently renamed Price Charities. The

mission of Price Charities is to improve the lives of families living in low income urban communities which

parallels NCHS’ mission to improve the health status of our diverse communities.

The Hervey family funding will be used to expand and support our Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) Program

to uninsured and underinsured patients at Grand Avenue Family Medicine Health Center in San Marcos. The

Women’s Health Services department will help women who are diagnosed with GDM or high blood sugar during

their pregnancy. These women receive extensive services from NCHS, including pre-natal care and nutrition and

counseling services. Funding will be used to support staff, to increase patient health education, and to assure close

monitoring of blood sugar through purchases of glucometers and food diaries. In addition, funding will be used to

purchase a much-needed electronic fetal monitor in order to identify early if the baby is in distress. “The generous

funding from the Hervey family will help us to work with women with GDM to help them control their blood sugar

levels, prevent complications during pregnancy, and give birth to a healthy baby,” said Mimi Mateo, CNM.

Thank you to the Hervey Family for their generous contribution. NCHS will be able to provide much needed care

to those people who might otherwise go without.

Bonsall West Elementary School is looking for volunteer reading tutors!! Bonsall West has a dedicated team of volunteer reading tutors—the “Everyone a Reader Team”-who work with those students that are not reading at grade level. As a tutor you receive a 1 1/2 hour training and then come to the school for one hour per week to read with your assigned students.

This program was designed by the San Diego County Office of Education and is a highly successful and positive way of supporting children in the process of learning to read.

It took 17 years to get there but this past we ekend the Gems N’ Loans store in Oceanside hit that magic number of $1,000,000 in loans!

As a result, North County residents are walking around with $1 million in their pockets.

Mack Hembree, the always smiling and genial owner of the Gems N’ Loans stores in Oceanside, Vista, and Escondido, announced that 45 year-old Mark Baskerville, of Oceanside, helped the store reach the $1,000,000 mark by taking out a loan against a flat screen TV. In recognition of that milestone, Gems N' Loans awarded him with $100 in cash! While Gems N' Loans does loan against musical instruments and newer computers and electronics, most of their loans are done on gold and jewelry.

“We’re very proud and excited about having reached this milestone,” said Hembree. “Now our Vista and Escondido stores have a real target to aim for. Our goal is to provide $1 million dollars in loans at each of our three stores. It took us 17 years at Oceanside . . . but perhaps our Vista and/or Escondido stores can do it in less time. We’re better known now. People have learned we offer quality service in a nice, clean atmosphere . . . they trust us. We trust them.”

On October 16, 2010 this 105 year old High School will be inducting its fifth class of Hall of Fame members into their Hall. Between now and June 15, 2010 people cna nominate past students of Oceanside High who attended the School for at least 2 years and graduated from the School by picking up applications at the following locations throughout North County. All four middle schools in Oceanside have applications available:

Jefferson Middle, Lincoln Middle, Martin Luther King Middle, and Chavez Middle School. Oceanside High School as well as the Oceanside Unified School District Offices has forms available as does Mira Costa College either at the Barnard Dr. site or the San Elijo campus. As increasing prices and decreasing values dominate the headlines, control conversations, and impact everything about lifestyles today, there is little wonder that people of all backgrounds and economic situations begin to express doubt over their financial futures. It is becoming increasingly clear that some people even find the economic picture to be potentially devastating to their quality of life. For others, many of whom will survive the financial downturns, the unsettling times will cause some serious re-thinking of plans and priorities. One of the stabilizing forces that people have latched on to in boom times, as well as bust periods of the past, are those life-long benefits afforded by institutes of higher education.

Fortunately, Southern California offers a wide choice of high quality, professionally run, and world renowned colleges and universities. This means if a person wants to retain a skill, re-train on a discipline, or develop a new profession or career; the ability to acquire the formal training needed is readily available throughout the region.

In the past, some students have reported that simply making the commitment to go back to school provides them with the necessary distraction from work, personal life, and economic conditions allowing them to focus on the future and re-think their priorities. It is not long before students realize how valuable and permanent a good education is to them. This understanding tends to allow them to put everything in perspective and to begin managing their lives instead of just living them. Another positive effect of higher education can be seen in a student’s family, co-workers, and friends. In other words, education tends to have such a far-reaching impact that it is one of the few investments that can impact an entire society in a positive way.

Higher education covers a lot of disciplines and can be very specific in some regards, but there are a couple qualities taught where the benefits transcend industries, disciplines, and cultures; these are leadership and critical thinking.

Critical thinking is what is needed to provide businesses with the proper analyses to envision solutions; whether that solution provides a recovery from financial disaster or an understanding of what it takes to move a firm to the next level. Institutes of higher education specialize in providing an environment which fosters this type of thinking.

Leadership is a skill required in all business disciplines which allows a professional to embrace visions developed through critical thinking and interpret the direction to others resulting in the required outcomes.

The Naming Game – How To Choose Your Domain Name

You want to create an internet presence, but you’re stuck at the first step: acquiring a domain name. Where do you begin, what do you call it, what mistakes should you avoid? For anyone choosing a domain for the first time, this article will answer those questions and make you a domain naming pro!

What is a domain?
Your domain name is the name that people will type into their browser address bar to arrive at your website. It is sometimes also known as a URL or web address. If you want a website, you must choose a domain name where your website will reside.

To begin your search, visit an online registrar (a domain registration company that sells domains), and start searching for possible domains. Working online like this lets you see immediately which domain names are already taken, and which are still available. There are many registrars, but GoDaddy.com is one of the least expensive so we recommend you start there.

Using Your Company Name.
The first name you should search for is your own company name, because this will be easiest for people to remember or figure out on their own. However, if it is a common name you may find it is already taken. In that case you could always contact the current owner of the domain to see if they would be willing to sell it to you. Keep in mind however, that usually they will be looking for a decent fee, especially if you’re asking them to part with a domain they are already using. There are times when this is worth the money, especially if you have already created a lot of awareness around your company or brand name.

Now, if you haven’t named your company yet, and it’s imperative that you have a matching domain, consider the available domains as you go through the naming process. For instance, when we hired our branding consultant to help us name One Lily, we started looking at domains first and what was available. We could have added terms to the end of the name, such as “design group”, or “media” or something similar to secure the domain if we needed to, but we found a great domain that was short and easy to spell, so we acquired that and then named our company to match.

If your company name is not available, you’re now faced with the task of being a bit more creative. Many registrars will automatically generate a list of alternate suggestions or variations when the name you want is already taken. This can be helpful, but we don’t recommend adding “my” or “the” as a prefix, or “online” to the end as they are extremely vague. Consider what you could possibly add to your name to create a good domain. For instance, can you add “group”, or “company” or something similar to make it work?

Tips for Choosing a Domain.

Look Professional. A domain that ends in .com is the most common extension on the web today for companies in the U.S. While there are other extensions (such as .org, .info, .net, .us, .tv etc…) these are less common. Subconsciously they convey that your company may be second rate since you couldn’t acquire a top level extension. Also, if the .com extension is already taken, securing that same domain name but with an alternate extension may just result in confusion for your customers and they may end up at someone else’s website. If your competitor has the.com extension, you can bet that you will be losing traffic to them.

Consider Your Marketing Plan. Should you hyphenate your domain to get what you want? The answer depends on how you plan to market your web presence. If you will rely on offline marketing (such as word of mouth, print materials, advertising, referrals, etc), then we do not recommend hyphenating your domain just to secure it.

The domain name should be memorable so that people can intuitively type it in when they get to a computer. Most people will not think of typing in a hyphen and would more than likely not end up at your website. As mentioned above, your competition with the unhyphenated form would probably love you for this. However, if your website is relying solely on search engine traffic (hits from Google, Yahoo, MSN, etc), then the use of a hyphenated domain can actually benefit you. Hyphenation separates the words in your domain name, allowing the search engines to recognize each word in the name. If your domain name includes popular search terms people use, then you’ll have that added benefit.

Length. How long can your domain be, and what characters can it include? Generally there is a limit of 67 characters, including the .com or other extension. Your domain name can only consist of letters, numbers or hyphens (dashes). No other characters are allowed.
We recommend you try and keep your domains short, but as available domains grow scarce, increasingly longer domains are being utilized. As long as it’s easy to spell, length is a secondary consideration. For example, if your company name was Your Best Website Designers we recommend you go ahead and register yourbestwebsitedesigners.com. This is your name, and will be the first thing people try and type in since that’s how you’re known to them.

Alternate Spellings. If you have a domain with tricky spelling, or commonly misspelled words, we recommend you also reserve those misspelled domains. For example, my last name is a bit tricky for some, Angela Nielsen, and if I wanted to use angelanielsen.com as my main website, I would probably also want to buy angelanielson.com, and angelanelson.com, which are the two most common ways my last name is spelled. Another example would be if you company was named Your Best Marriage. You would get yourbestmarriage.com as your domain, but since marriage is a commonly misspelled word, you should also reserve yourbestmariage.com and yourbestmarrage.com, two ways marriage is commonly misspelled.

You may register more than one variation on your domain name, but this doesn’t mean you will need multiple websites. Just ask your registrar (or hosting company) to forward the misspelled domains to the main domain. This way if someone types the domain in wrong, they still end up in the right place. For an example of this in action, if you type in 1lily.com, you will still end up at onelily.com (our main domain).

Maintain control of your domain names. When you begin the naming and selection process, you will probably register a number of domains – possibly more than you will actually use. You may buy some that you think you might use in the future. You shouldn’t pay more than $10 a year for your domains, so the investment is very minimal. Make sure you register domains in your name, not the name of your web design company or host, as they would then become the owner of record, not yourself. Also, it’s easier if you stick with one registrar. Too often we see people with domains registered at many different registrars, and they risk losing track of what domains they own. Register them in one place, and keep them all under one account.

You should now be ready to tackle the naming game. You know the dos and don’ts as well as several tips. Have fun searching for your perfect domain, and if all else fails, ask for suggestions from friends, colleagues or even a branding consultant.
