SANDAG’s iCommute program is pleased to ring in 2010 with the 8^th annual Diamond Awards. Diamond Awards honor companies, organizations, and individuals for their outstanding contributions to reducing traffic congestion and improving mobility in the San Diego region. All businesses, organizations, and public or private agencies that maintain an employee transportation program in San Diego County are eligible to win.

Diamond Award-winning organizations promote alternatives to driving alone, including vanpooling, carpooling, use of public transit, teleworking, flexible scheduling, walking, biking, or a combination of these. Some organizations also provide incentives, subsidies, or pre-tax deductions to their employees to support their participation in eligible programs.

As increasing prices and decreasing values dominate the headlines, control conversations, and impact everything about lifestyles today, there is little wonder that people of all backgrounds and economic situations begin to express doubt over their financial futures. It is becoming increasingly clear that some people even find the economic picture to be potentially devastating to their quality of life. For others, many of whom will survive the financial downturns, the unsettling times will cause some serious re-thinking of plans and priorities. One of the stabilizing forces that people have latched on to in boom times, as well as bust periods of the past, are those life-long benefits afforded by institutes of higher education.

Fortunately, Southern California offers a wide choice of high quality, professionally run, and world renowned colleges and universities. This means if a person wants to retain a skill, re-train on a discipline, or develop a new profession or career; the ability to acquire the formal training needed is readily available throughout the region.

In the past, some students have reported that simply making the commitment to go back to school provides them with the necessary distraction from work, personal life, and economic conditions allowing them to focus on the future and re-think their priorities. It is not long before students realize how valuable and permanent a good education is to them. This understanding tends to allow them to put everything in perspective and to begin managing their lives instead of just living them. Another positive effect of higher education can be seen in a student’s family, co-workers, and friends. In other words, education tends to have such a far-reaching impact that it is one of the few investments that can impact an entire society in a positive way.

Higher education covers a lot of disciplines and can be very specific in some regards, but there are a couple qualities taught where the benefits transcend industries, disciplines, and cultures; these are leadership and critical thinking.

Critical thinking is what is needed to provide businesses with the proper analyses to envision solutions; whether that solution provides a recovery from financial disaster or an understanding of what it takes to move a firm to the next level. Institutes of higher education specialize in providing an environment which fosters this type of thinking.

Leadership is a skill required in all business disciplines which allows a professional to embrace visions developed through critical thinking and interpret the direction to others resulting in the required outcomes.

A good education takes some time and some expense, but there is absolutely no doubt of its worth.

MiraCosta Named One of the Fastest Growing Community Colleges in the Country

MiraCosta College is the eleventh fastest-growing community college in the United States, according to “Community College Weekly,” which ranked public, two-year colleges by the percent change in headcount during the fall 2007-fall 2008 academic year. The college was compared to other community colleges in the United States that have enrollments of 10,000 students ormore, and the results were published in the November 30, 2009 edition of the magazine.

“MiraCosta is committed to serving the needs of our local community, and the community has made it clear that they want more courses to prepare students for local jobs and to transfer to four-year institutions,” says MiraCosta College Superintendent/President Francisco Rodriguez. “By responding to local needs, we’ve been able to steward the public’s resources in appropriate and responsive ways.”

MiraCosta was the only San Diego-based community college listed in the article, though nine of the 15 colleges experiencing the most enrollment growth are in California. Between fall 2007 and fall 2008, student enrollment increased at MiraCosta College by 14.5%, or by approximately 1,550 students. The college accommodated this growth by increasing the number of course sections offered, and by expanding its distance education program.

“We have been smart and strategic in what we are offering to students,” says Vice President of Instruction Pam Deegan. “We’ve been able to increase distance education courses, reformat the times we offer classes to better accommodate student schedules and fill more seats per class.”

MiraCosta has continued to accommodate a growing student body. In fall 2009, the college enrolled the largest number of students ever—13,618, up 14.8% since fall 2008. The college is also anticipating a record number of students on the first day of spring classes on January 25.

“More and more students have been shut out of the UC and CSU systems,” says Deegan. “This, coupled with more people wanting to take courses to make themselves more marketable has meant that we have an unprecedented demand for classes. We are fortunate that the careful financial stewardship of the Board of Trustees has allowed the college to continue to offer more courses in order to meet these growing student needs.”

The college has not only been able to grow its course offerings, but it has also added a new stand-alone Registered Nursing Program this spring, which will graduate 40 new RNs each year.

The college is also planning on offering a new associate in science degree in energy technology beginning in fall 2010.

MiraCosta College to Honor New Citizens

Forty-five graduates of MiraCosta College’s citizenship course successfully obtained U.S. citizenship in 2009 and will be honored during a special ceremony on Saturday, January 23. The event will be held from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at the MiraCosta College Community Learning Center (CLC), 1831 Mission Ave. in Oceanside.

This is the fifth citizenship celebration held by MiraCosta College, and this year’s students came to MiraCosta from China, Mexico, Hungary, Thailand, Peru, Brazil, El Salvador, Taiwan, Russia and Ukraine. MiraCosta Vice President of Instruction Pam Deegan will welcome the students, and the speaker will be John Ramirez of the San Diego Office of U. S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.

MiraCosta College’s citizenship instruction is offered at the Community Learning Center in Oceanside. The program offers students a flexible schedule and personalized instruction in order to prepare them for the naturalization process. This course is recommended for medical professionals; lifeguards; aerobics/fitness instructors; coaches and teachers; and public, private safety and security employees. In this class, offered through MiraCosta College’s Community Services Program, students will how to recognize and care for breathing and cardiac emergencies for adults, children and infants; how to perform two- rescuer CPR; how to use a resuscitation mask (pocket mask) and bag-valve mask; and how to use an Automated External Defibrillation (AED) device for victims of sudden cardiac arrest.

Kinane Events announces record year at the 2009 Pacific Marine Credit Union O’side Turkey Trot

Kinane Events and the 4^thAnnual Pacific Marine Credit Union Oceanside Turkey Trot, held on Thanksgiving Day, brought record crowds with 4,800 registered participants. This year’s event raised over $17,120 given to 40+ schools and charities in Oceanside.

There were a total of 80 teams competing for Largest Team title, compared to 66 at the 2008 Turkey Trot. Cameron Fitness won the competition with 78 entries in the 2009 Pacific Marine Credit Union O'side Turkey Trot (see attached photo). Last year's largest team, Oceans Eleven Casino, increased its entries from 29 to 58 to finish a strong second. Teams with 20 or more participants received $100 gift certificates to 333 Pacific Steaks and Seafood in Downtown Oceanside.

Congratulations to 10-year old Oceanside resident, Kitanna Leasiolagi, who created a costume that gobbled up the competition (see photo below). For her winning efforts, Kitanna won a $100 gift certificate to 333 Pacific Steaks and Seafood.

The Oceanside Turkey Trot is a 5K race benefiting the Move Your Feet Before You Eat! Foundation and the Oceanside Schools. Five dollars of each registration fee goes directly towards the Oceanside school of the participant’s choosing.

That’s what is planned for the gala event at this Thursday’s Red Carpet Opening of “To Save A Life” at the Regal Theatre in Downtown Oceanside.

“We’re not sure if the weather will dampen any of our plans” said Julia Mottola, Event Director, “but come rain or shine we’ve got the Red Carpet covered. Final confirmation of the guest list is still in process, but those confirmed so far are an impressive bunch.”

OCEANSIDE, January 7 – Dr. Madeline Rodriguez , Chair of the Tri-City Healthcare District Board of Directors has announced the District will award up to $300,000 in grants to non-profit organizations seeking to improve the health and well-being of residents of the Tri-City region. The Request for Proposals (RFP) will be released this week. To be considered, agencies have to be located in or serve the residents of the cities of Carlsbad , Vista and/or Oceanside . Excluded from consideration are other hospitals, hospital districts and government agencies.

For FY 2010, approximately $100,000 of the total $300,000 will be awarded to one or more collaborative projects, each with two or more organizations working with each other and with Tri-City Medical Center to implement an innovative program. The remaining approximately $200,000 will be awarded to single organizations for their individual projects. Proposals must address one or more of the following priorities:

· Physical activity & exercise

· Diabetes

· Heart disease

Plastic Fantastic explores the contrast between McMansions, plastic surgery and the artificiality of high end living with San Diego ’s gorgeous seaside, weather and natural beauty. While seemingly random and difficult to decipher, Plastic Fantastic references today’s open-source culture of sampling and recycling. Fashion, modern architecture and beach aestheticism combine and collide in Renshaw’s vibrant mixed media compositions. A preview reception introduces the exhibition on Saturday, January 30^th from 5:00- 7:00 p.m. OMA’s receptions are known for their party atmosphere complete with wine and scrumptious hors d’oeuvres prepared by OMA’s own Culinary Arts Council. Admission to the reception is $10. Members of the museum enjoy complimentary admission as a benefit of membership. The exhibition will be on view January 31 through June 20, 2010.

Pulsating with energy and pop abstraction, the imagery in Allison Renshaw’s paintings allows lines between organic and man-made to blur while exploiting the tension between plasticity and temporality. She creates a chaotic universe weaving fragments of pop culture into a fusion of color and intricate doodle-like patterns. Similar to iconic abstract artist Vasily Kandinsky, Renshaw draws much of her inspiration from music. Color is playfully and dramatically used in each piece creating a cadence that pulls viewers into her subconscious creations.

Oceanside Museum of Art is excited to present the first West Coast one woman museum exhibition for San Diego artist Allison Renshaw. She is a mid-career artist living and working in Leucadia and has exhibited her work extensively across the nation. Her work has been shown at the Delaware Art Museum , the Holter Museum of Art in Montana , and the Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts.

Renshaw will discuss the process and meaning behind her work during an informal “Gallery Walk and Talk” on Thursday, February 25^th from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. The lecture is $5 and free for members of Oceanside Museum of Art.

Oceanside Museum of Art Completes $6 Million Capital Campaign

Oceanside Museum of Art enters a new decade debt free! Skip Pahl, Executive Director of Oceanside Museum of Art has announced that the museum has completed a Capital Campaign that enabled the museum to expand from 5,000 to 21,000 square feet. Contributions to the campaign, which began July 1, 2004, and ended December 15, 2009, were made by hundreds of generous friends and supporters of the museum. In the final year of the campaign OMA raised a total of $760,000 during one of the worst recessions in the nation’s history.

“Not only did we reach our goal, we surpassed it” states Pahl. Thanks to the Howard Charitable Foundation who in 2009 offered to match any donation to the capital campaign, the museum was able to double every contribution. When the museum reached its goal December 15^th the Foundation agreed to extend the matching grant to the Annual Campaign helping to cover general operating costs offset by the Capital Campaign.

The museum hosted a Groundbreaking Celebration and “pocket parade” September 24, 2006 that kicked off the start of the construction on Phase One of the museum’s expansion. Phase One joined the existing museum housed in an historic Irving Gill building with a new three-level Central Pavilion designed by celebrated Modernist architect Frederick Fisher. The ground floor includes the museum terrace, lobby, gallery space and catering kitchen for our special events. The second floor showcases two additional galleries, an auditorium for films, lectures, and musical performances, board room and office space. And the basement provides space for a design studio, carpentry shop, and ample storage for oversized works of art.

Executive Director Skip Pahl of Oceanside Museum of Art Retires After 12 Years

After more than 12 years of dedicated service James (Skip) Pahl, Executive Director of Oceanside Museum of Art since 1997, has announced his retirement effective April 2010. Pahl will remain with the museum until the Board of Directors finds his replacement through a national search. Age 66, Pahl is looking forward to retirement and working on projects that have been on hold due to his passionate commitment to the museum.

The advancement of Oceanside Museum of Art under Pahl’s leadership includes the dramatic growth of the facility. He led the $6 million capital campaign to expand the museum, culminating in a soaring addition designed by internationally known modernist architect Fredrick Fisher. During his tenure he increased the size of the exhibition schedule and the permanent collection, strengthened the mission of the museum and instituted significant public programs.

Under his leadership the museum was awarded two $300,000 three-year grants from the James Irvine Foundation in recognition and support of OMA’s innovative programming. This was a very difficult and competitive process that involved approximately 4 months of work. He led a Capital Campaign to pay-off OMA’s construction debt raising a total of $750,000 during one of the worst recessions in the nation’s history and managed the museum through a period of economic turmoil successfully avoiding staff lay-offs or cutting core programming. During this difficult period the museum audience has significantly broadened, deepened, and diversified.

curating exhibitions, fundraising, and maintaining a financially stable institution. He is a very hands-on Director that has created a family like environment where volunteers and visitors are welcome to visit his office anytime with greetings and ideas.

A California native, Pahl was born in Orange , California . He began his museum career in 1973 as the first Director of the Rex Wignall Museum-Gallery at Chaffey Community College . In 1980 Pahl was named the Assistant Director at the Museum of International Folk Art , a unit of the Museum of New Mexico in Santa Fe , New Mexico . There he helped with the design development, construction and opening of the Alexander Girard Wing. Because of his success in this position he was invited to serve as the Deputy Director of Public Programs and Education at the Museum of New Mexico .

Returning to California in 1987, Pahl assumed the Directorship of the struggling San Diego Children’s Museum and in five years time brought the institution through substantial growth while retiring its long term debt and placing the institution on a sound financial footing. In 1992 he accepted the position of Associate Director of Mingei International Museum and played a key role in having that museum selected as principal tenant in Balboa Park ’s House of Charm. Pahl joined the Oceanside Museum of Art as Executive Director and its first paid staff member in November of 1997 just as the Board completed the renovation of the Gill Building and opened the museum on a full time basis.

“The museum is in a great place for transition” states Pahl who leaves his successor with 4 full time employees, 4 part time employees, a $700,000 annual operating budget and a stunning new building full of potential. Since the Fredrick Fisher Central Pavilion opened in March 2008 the museum has seen a tremendous growth in programming adding a Jazz Concert Series, Art After Dark, Free Family Art Day and an exhibition schedule that jumped from 5 to approximately 15 exhibition a year! Trustee Emeritus Bob Pickrel who worked with Pahl since his first day at the museum said “We were lucky to have Skip as long as we did. He is a dear friend who taught me how to appreciate art. We will miss him.” Pahl intends on spending retirement working on his 20-foot wooden boat that he has been building for 10 years.

NCHS looking for donations to provide comfort for hundreds of animals

(Oceanside, CA – Nov. 30, 2009) –North County Humane Society & SPCA (NCHS) wishes that the public remember the hundreds of homeless and abandoned dogs, cats, and rabbits who will be spending this holiday season at the shelter. By donating a gift of food, toys, blankets, or money to a homeless animal in need, people can make holiday wishes come true for our furry friends.

“As the budget gets a little tighter every kind of donation assists us in providing more for the animals in our care and making their holiday season a little brighter,” said NCHS Executive Director Julie Bank. “When you give a gift to the animals, you truly are making a change in their life.”

Monetary donors will have the opportunity to hang an ornament honoring a special person or pet on the NCHS holiday tree. Donated pet food feeds the thousands of animals that come through the shelter doors and supports the NCHS foster care program that cares for orphaned or injured pets. NCHS also accepts donations of old blankets and towels to help keep the animals comfortable and warm as Jack Frost cools the air.

Board Approves Merger of Two Local Animal Welfare Non-Profits

San Diego — The San Diego Humane Society and SPCA board of trustees voted last night, Dec. 2, 2009, to approve the merger of its organization with the North County Humane Society and SPCA, the Oceanside-based animal welfare organization.

The combined organization will operate under the name “San Diego Humane Society and SPCA” following a successful closing period, which is expected on or around the first of the year. The name of the North County facility on San Luis Rey Road in Oceanside will become “San Diego Humane Society and SPCA, North Campus.” Staff and leadership at both campuses are excited to work together for the good of animals and people in the community to promote the humane treatment of animals, prevent cruelty to animals, and strengthen the human-animal bond. The benefits of the merger are many, including:

· More treatable animals’ lives will be saved.

· The merger will bring additional resources to advance animal welfare services.

· The merged organizations will work together to ensure that both owner-relinquished animals and stray animals receive the same standard of veterinary medical care as owned pets in the community.

· The organizations will be able to offer increased services for individual pet owners when they are faced with the challenges and difficulties of separating from a beloved pet.

· More lifesaving education programs for both children and adults can be offered throughout the county, helping to create a more compassionate community.

As the two campuses work collectively to expand programs and services, the current program offerings at both the North Campus and the centrally located Gaines Street Campus will continue uninterrupted. The animal control contracts managed by the North County Humane Society will remain in place under the new San Diego Humane Society North Campus and will be fulfilled as contracted with Oceanside and Vista .

The next six-month period will be devoted to planning for a smooth transition and effective implementation of integrated practices.

OCC Members launch Major Motion Picture

OCEANSIDE , CA (December 7, 2009) – “To Save A Life” is a new feature length film that is set for major theatrical release by Samuel Goldwyn Films on January 22^nd, 2010. The screenplay was written by Jim Britts, youth pastor of New Song Community Church and was filmed in several Oceanside locales including Oceanside High School , Mira Costa College , New Song Community Church , Eternal Hills Memorial Park , Harbor, Beach, and other locations in and around North County .

The production of “To Save a Life” was a community effort with more than 80% of the cast and crew coming from the Oceanside and North County area. In addition to the New Song Community Church, other OCC members that participated in the movie project including Debra Allen of Eternal Hills Memorial Park; Lisa Frost of Amazeinc Internet Solutions and Steve Statzer of Sagepoint Advisors, Inc.

The film used Hollywood talent as well, including director Brian Baugh, (“An American Carol, “Jack and the Beanstalk”) and stars Randy Wayne (“Grizzly Park, Frat Party”), Deja Kreutzberg (“Law and Order”, “CSI: Miami”), Kim Hidalgo (“The New Adventures of Old Christine”) and Sean Michael Afable (“Akeelah and the Bee”).

“To Save a Life” is the story of an all-American teen Jake Taylor, who seemingly has it all. After a childhood friend’s suicide, Jake’s world turns upside down, and he is forced to make decisions that could change his life forever. The film, according to Peter Goldwyn, Vice President of Acquisitions, “is about making unexpected choices and sacrifices, while having the courage and determination to persevere against all odds.” Through this film the producers hope to empower teens to reach out to troubled peers, giving hope to those contemplating suicide and to turn the tide of teen violence so prevalent in today’s headlines.

The movie features music by the popular San Diego based band Switchfoot, and the movie trailer is the first video to include music from Switchfoot’s brand new CD.

Grammy winner Charlie Peacock is the music supervisor and Grammy, Emmy and Interactive Academy Award winning composers Christopher Lennertz and Timothy Wynn created the score.

“To Save a Life” is a co-production of New Song Pictures, a division of New Song Community Church , and Outreach, Inc. a Vista, CA, marketing company that has provided promotional tools for some of Hollywood ’s most successful movies: The Passion of the Christ, The Chronicles of Narnia and The Nativity Story. Business Emergency Response Initiative (BERI) Workshops 2010

Tri-City Medical Center along with the Carlsbad , Oceanside , San Marcos , and Vista Chambers of Commerce and the San Diego North Economic Development Council will sponsor the Business Emergency Response Initiative (BERI) Workshops 2010 at Tri-City Medical Center .

BERI Workshops 2010 are a direct response to the BERI Symposium that occurred in 2008. Following an eight-hour overview on disaster preparedness for the business community, participants agreed that a series of business-focused, hands-on workshops were needed.

“The BERI Symposium 2008 was the first time that North County businesses got together to plan and learn how to prepare for and mitigate emergencies or disasters,” said Jeff Segall, Vice President of Public Affairs and Marketing at Tri-City. “We are happy to once again host the BERI series with three consecutive workshops aimed at offering tangible and useful information that will provide the basic skills needed to protect businesses against disasters and emergencies.”

While the workshops are designed to be taken as a series, participants can attend single sessions, if desired. The following sessions will be offered at Tri-City Medical Center in Assembly Room 1.

Session 1

Understanding and Developing a Hazard Vulnerability Assessment (HVA)

Friday, January 15, 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.

This three-hour workshop focuses on the first step in developing a corporate emergency response plan, the Hazard Vulnerability Assessment (HVA). This assessment will identify issues and threats a business has that could impact its operation during and following a disaster. During this session, business leaders will better understand the elements of an HVA and how to identify operational risks. Presenters will show specific examples of how to prepare an HVA and will provide a working template for attendees. At the end of the session, attendees will learn the key elements of an HVA and will be provided the tools necessary to prepare a basic HVA.

Understanding and Developing a Business Emergency Operations Plan

In this three-hour, hands-on workshop, you will learn the basics for building an effective disaster recovery or business continuity plan (BCP). Experts with extensive knowledge of continuity plans will guide you through the process. At the end of this session, you will better understand the importance and structure of a resumption plan, and will be given the basics needed to begin the process of developing a plan tailored to your company.

Chamber Board Member Jacque Martin has been recognized by the San Diego Business Journal in their 16th Annual "Women Who Mean Business" Awards.

In January, Jacque Martin earned her Certified Advertising Specialist industry designation, a certification held by less than 15 percent of professionals in the promotional advertising industry. She has continued to expand her business in the current down economy. Martin has also been a mentor for many women trying to break into the industry and works with various local women's organizations.

Martin has been an inspiration to others her entire life. As the mother of a child with special needs, she has never backed down from a challenge. With Martin's determination, her daughter, Heidi, has just finishded a new two-year program at UCLA where children with special needs learn how to live independently and hold down a real job.

While basic pay and most forms of special pay (hardship duty pay, hostile fire pay, special duty assignment pay, and incentive pay) for service in the active or reserve forces are taxable, Congress and the IRS provide that many types of military pay and benefits are not taxable.
Here is a list of common military pay items and benefits that are not taxed (whether they are received as an expense reimbursement or an allowance):
- Living Allowances
  - Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH)
    - As an added benefit, you can still deduct mortgage interest and real estate taxes on your home even if you pay these expenses with your BAH.
  - Basic Allowance for Subsistence (BAS)
  - Housing and cost-of-living allowances abroad whether paid by the U.S. Government or by a foreign government
  - Overseas Housing Allowance (OHA)
- Moving Allowances
  - Dislocation
  - Base realignment and closure benefits
  - Move-in housing
  - Moving household and personal items
  - Moving trailers or mobile homes
  - Storage
  - Temporary lodging and temporary lodging expenses
- Travel Allowances
- Combat Zone Pay
  - This is an exception to the general rule that basic military pay is taxable. Compensation for active service while in a combat zone or a qualified hazardous duty area is not taxable.
  - Commissioned officers may not be able to exclude all their combat pay.
  - Under a special provision you can choose to include combat pay in your “earned income” which is used to determine the amount of your EIC. This election may increase the amount of your EIC.
- Family Allowances
  - Separation
  - Certain educational expenses for dependents
- Death Allowances
  - Burial services
  - Death gratuity payments to eligible survivors
  - Travel of dependents to burial site
- Other payments
  - Uniform allowances
  - Uniforms furnished to enlisted personnel
  - Group-term life insurance
  - Disability
- “In-kind” Military Benefits
  - Dependent-care assistance program
  - Legal assistance
  - Medical/dental care
- Military disability pensions from a service-connected disability
There are also several provisions which exclude many forms of veterans’ benefits which are administered by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Here is a list of amounts paid to veterans or their families that are not taxable:
- Education, training, and subsistence allowances (for example, GI Bill benefits)
- Disability compensation and pension payments for disabilities
- Grants for homes designed for wheelchair living
- Grants for motor vehicles for veterans who lost their sight or the use of their limbs
- Veterans’ insurance proceeds and dividends paid either to veterans or their beneficiaries, including the proceeds of a veteran’s endowment policy paid before death
- Interest on insurance dividends left on deposit with the VA
- Benefits under a dependent-care assistance program
- The death gratuity paid to a survivor of a member of the Armed Forces who died after September 10, 2001
- Payments made under the compensated work therapy program
- Any bonus payment by a state or political subdivision because of service in combat zone

The Naming Game – How To Choose Your Domain Name

You want to create an internet presence, but you’re stuck at the first step: acquiring a domain name. Where do you begin, what do you call it, what mistakes should you avoid? For anyone choosing a domain for the first time, this article will answer those questions and make you a domain naming pro!

What is a domain?
Your domain name is the name that people will type into their browser address bar to arrive at your website. It is sometimes also known as a URL or web address. If you want a website, you must choose a domain name where your website will reside.

To begin your search, visit an online registrar (a domain registration company that sells domains), and start searching for possible domains. Working online like this lets you see immediately which domain names are already taken, and which are still available. There are many registrars, but GoDaddy.com is one of the least expensive so we recommend you start there.

Using Your Company Name.
The first name you should search for is your own company name, because this will be easiest for people to remember or figure out on their own. However, if it is a common name you may find it is already taken. In that case you could always contact the current owner of the domain to see if they would be willing to sell it to you. Keep in mind however, that usually they will be looking for a decent fee, especially if you’re asking them to part with a domain they are already using. There are times when this is worth the money, especially if you have already created a lot of awareness around your company or brand name.

Now, if you haven’t named your company yet, and it’s imperative that you have a matching domain, consider the available domains as you go through the naming process. For instance, when we hired our branding consultant to help us name One Lily, we started looking at domains first and what was available. We could have added terms to the end of the name, such as “design group”, or “media” or something similar to secure the domain if we needed to, but we found a great domain that was short and easy to spell, so we acquired that and then named our company to match.

If your company name is not available, you’re now faced with the task of being a bit more creative. Many registrars will automatically generate a list of alternate suggestions or variations when the name you want is already taken. This can be helpful, but we don’t recommend adding “my” or “the” as a prefix, or “online” to the end as they are extremely vague. Consider what you could possibly add to your name to create a good domain. For instance, can you add “group”, or “company” or something similar to make it work?

Tips for Choosing a Domain.

Look Professional. A domain that ends in .com is the most common extension on the web today for companies in the U.S. While there are other extensions (such as .org, .info, .net, .us, .tv etc…) these are less common. Subconsciously they convey that your company may be second rate since you couldn’t acquire a top level extension. Also, if the .com extension is already taken, securing that same domain name but with an alternate extension may just result in confusion for your customers and they may end up at someone else’s website. If your competitor has the.com extension, you can bet that you will be losing traffic to them.

Consider Your Marketing Plan. Should you hyphenate your domain to get what you want? The answer depends on how you plan to market your web presence. If you will rely on offline marketing (such as word of mouth, print materials, advertising, referrals, etc), then we do not recommend hyphenating your domain just to secure it.

The domain name should be memorable so that people can intuitively type it in when they get to a computer. Most people will not think of typing in a hyphen and would more than likely not end up at your website. As mentioned above, your competition with the unhyphenated form would probably love you for this. However, if your website is relying solely on search engine traffic (hits from Google, Yahoo, MSN, etc), then the use of a hyphenated domain can actually benefit you. Hyphenation separates the words in your domain name, allowing the search engines to recognize each word in the name. If your domain name includes popular search terms people use, then you’ll have that added benefit.

Length. How long can your domain be, and what characters can it include? Generally there is a limit of 67 characters, including the .com or other extension. Your domain name can only consist of letters, numbers or hyphens (dashes). No other characters are allowed.
We recommend you try and keep your domains short, but as available domains grow scarce, increasingly longer domains are being utilized. As long as it’s easy to spell, length is a secondary consideration. For example, if your company name was Your Best Website Designers we recommend you go ahead and register yourbestwebsitedesigners.com. This is your name, and will be the first thing people try and type in since that’s how you’re known to them.

Alternate Spellings. If you have a domain with tricky spelling, or commonly misspelled words, we recommend you also reserve those misspelled domains. For example, my last name is a bit tricky for some, Angela Nielsen, and if I wanted to use angelanielsen.com as my main website, I would probably also want to buy angelanielson.com, and angelanelson.com, which are the two most common ways my last name is spelled. Another example would be if you company was named Your Best Marriage. You would get yourbestmarriage.com as your domain, but since marriage is a commonly misspelled word, you should also reserve yourbestmariage.com and yourbestmarrage.com, two ways marriage is commonly misspelled.

You may register more than one variation on your domain name, but this doesn’t mean you will need multiple websites. Just ask your registrar (or hosting company) to forward the misspelled domains to the main domain. This way if someone types the domain in wrong, they still end up in the right place. For an example of this in action, if you type in 1lily.com, you will still end up at onelily.com (our main domain).

Maintain control of your domain names. When you begin the naming and selection process, you will probably register a number of domains – possibly more than you will actually use. You may buy some that you think you might use in the future. You shouldn’t pay more than $10 a year for your domains, so the investment is very minimal. Make sure you register domains in your name, not the name of your web design company or host, as they would then become the owner of record, not yourself. Also, it’s easier if you stick with one registrar. Too often we see people with domains registered at many different registrars, and they risk losing track of what domains they own. Register them in one place, and keep them all under one account.

You should now be ready to tackle the naming game. You know the dos and don’ts as well as several tips. Have fun searching for your perfect domain, and if all else fails, ask for suggestions from friends, colleagues or even a branding consultant.

The Oceanside Chamber is excited to announce that our annual business expo will now be known as the San Diego Business Showcase. We have decided to make it even bigger and better by inviting more San Diego County Chamber to participate in this event.

Plates for 8 are Great!

If you are a Chamber member and have never attended one of our "Plates for 8" Small Group Networking Luncheons, PLEASE try one! These have become our most popular and productive networking event. As Chamber Member Stan Quinn put it in his Twitter posting this morning..."Oside Chamber Plates for 8. One of the best networking functions I attend." Thanks Stan!

What is a Plates for 8? Well, here's how we describe them on the Chamber website: "Plates for 8 Luncheons provide a chance for 8-10 Chamber Members to join for lunch and learn more about each other’s businesses. A Chamber representative hosts and facilitates the “Plates for Eight” luncheon at a local restaurant in order to provide an in depth networking opportunity for a small group of members."

We have two terrific Members Services Representatives, Joanne Harris and Sue Pixler that facilitate these luncheons for us. They each typically run one every month. The feedback we receive on the quality of networking is tremendous. Joanne facilitated one today and apparently an hour and a half was not enough time to contain all the networking that needed to occur. Three of the attendees came back to the Chamber office to continue doing business in our conference room. What more can I say.

You have to eat lunch, so why not do it with 7 or 8 other people who could potentially be great business connections for you. Worst case scenario: you get a great lunch at Hunter Steakhouse and make some new friends.
