The Grant Theme for 2008 was
“Supporting a Healthy Planet & Living Green”

Desiree Dillon, North Terrace
Elementary
This grant will be used in
implementing The Edible Schoolyard Garden, by creating an organic
garden. The children will learn to grow, harvest, and prepare nutritious
seasonal produce. They will visit Oceanside’s Farmer’s Market and will
host their own Spring farmers market.

Madeline Ramirez,
Stuart Mesa Elementary
Madeline will use this grant to
take her students to the famous Oceanside Sea Star classroom that
operates out of the Oceanside Harbor. This program allows students to
examine physical ocean properties as well as living organisms. The
children will be allowed to observe and participate in scientific
hands-on interaction with plankton, birds, seals, sea lions, and other
marine life while at sea.
Mark Wagner,
Palmquist Elementary
Palmquist’s new mission is to
teach students about organic farming. Beginning this Spring, Palmquist
will share and sell its organic fruits and vegetables at the Sunset
Market. The children will be taught about composting, enriched soil,
and growing produce without pesticides.

Maureen Weston, Mission
Elementary
At Mission Elementary, teachers will use this grant to create units on
planting, harvesting, and
composting from seed to compost.
Activities will support language arts, science, art, math, and social
studies. The project will include a photo journal that will include
children’s art, drawings, and a garden growth chart.
Micaela Reese,
Laurel Elementary
This grant will support the San
Diego Zoo’s “Cans for Critters”. This is a conservation program that
educates students about recycling and donating funds for endangered
species. This will be a school wide project, that will teach students
about the importance of recycling and preserving the environment, and
protecting the creatures of the earth.

Shelly Burwell & Ann
Ellinwood, North Terrace Elementary
Shelly and Ann will improve the
structure of the school’s existing garden by way of setting up
sturdy, raised beds for the students and their families to
produce nutritious food for the classroom and school. Their
project will last for years to come!
