In 1952 representatives of the Carlsbad, Oceanside and Vista Chambers of Commerce identified a need for a modern local hospital to serve a growing community. They joined together in 1955 to form the Tri-City Hospital Association to oversee and coordinate the formation of Tri-City Healthcare District, the governing arm of Tri-City Medical Center.

Many trace discount retailing´s birth to 1962, the first year of operation for Kmart, Target and Wal-Mart. But by that time, Sam Walton´s tiny chain of variety stores in Arkansas and Kansas was already facing competition from regional discount chains.
