MiraCosta College Presentation to Focus on Luiseño Indian Pablo Tac
Historian Lisbeth Haas will visit MiraCosta College to talk about the subject of her upcoming book, “Pablo Tac, Indigenous Scholar”. The event is scheduled for Monday, November 14, 12:45-1:45 p.m. in Room Aztlan B (Bldg. 3400) at MiraCosta College, 1 Barnard Drive, Oceanside. The talk is free and open to the public, although seating is limited.
Professor Haas will give a talk about the life and writing of Pablo Tac, a Luiseño Indian born at Mission San Luis Rey in 1820. In 1832, Tac left San Luis Rey and went to Mexico City, and then on to Rome, to study for the priesthood in order to return to San Luis Rey as a Luiseño priest. As he studied, Tac wrote a partial Spanish-Luiseño dictionary and grammar guide, and a history of Luiseños after the Spanish established the missions. Professor Haas will also talk about the major changes in Indian lives and politics throughout the mission era and about indigenous rights under Spanish and Mexican law.
Author and professor Dr. Lisbeth Haas has an extensive knowledge of California history and has written several books probing various aspects of the colonial era along the borderland, as well as the history and language of the indigenous Luiseño Indians. She received her doctorate in history at University of California, Irvine. She is currently a professor of history and chair of Feminist Studies at University of California, Santa Cruz.
The event is provided through the generosity of Professor Haas, the Old Mission San Luis Rey Historical Society, the MiraCosta History Department, and the MiraCosta Office of the President. She is scheduled to speak at the Mission on November 15 at 7 p.m. The lecture is the third in a series "Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow," sponsored by the Old Mission San Luis Rey Historic Foundation, a group supporting the preservation of the Mission.
