In honor of October, Hispanic Heritage Month, MiraCosta College will host a presentation entitled “The Hispanic U.S. Veteran Perspective,” to be held Monday, October 1, 9:30 a.m., in the Aztlan Room of the Student Center, 1 Barnard Drive, Oceanside.
Three Hispanic community leaders/military veterans will share their personal stories and perspectives on the contributions Latinos have made to the U.S. armed forces:
· Manny Aguilar served four years in the U.S. Navy as a radioman and yeoman, primarily in San Diego aboard the U.S.S. John Paul Jones. He has two decades of experience in general management, public relations, client advocacy, customer service and civic involvement.
· John Herrera served in the Texas National Guard and on active duty in the U.S. Navy. During his nearly 23 years of military duty, he served on destroyers and cruisers, and for Fleet Marine Force in Viet Nam, and received numerous awards and citations.
· Sandra Silva Fichter is a U.S. Army veteran and served as platoon leader and company commander. She is the vice president of the Veterans Association North County, an all-volunteer organization established to provide aid and resources to military, veterans and their families.
A presentation of colors by the El Camino High School JROTC Color Guard will open the event, which is free and open to all.
