We are seeing more and more victims persuaded to drain their life savings, convert it into gold, and hand it over to strangers posing as government agents.

This is not really about gold. It’s a sophisticated deception that starts as a tech support scam and quickly escalates into something far more sinister.

It begins with a pop-up on a computer claiming to be from Microsoft or another trusted company. Victims are told their device has been hacked. Then the fear intensifies: scammers claim the victim is connected to serious crimes or that their financial accounts are compromised. Panic sets in.

That’s when the criminals take control.

They convince victims to “protect” their money by withdrawing it, buying gold, and handing it to a courier who claims to be a government agent safeguarding assets during an “investigation.” Victims are often told to stay silent and even to lie to their own bank or family because of a supposed gag order.

These criminals are highly skilled manipulators. In one recent case, a victim lost $187,000 and was on the verge of losing hundreds of thousands more. Despite warnings from bank employees and financial advisors, she believed the scammers over the people trying to help her.

This is happening every day. In 2025 alone, San Diego seniors lost $140 million to scams like this, often driven by international criminal networks. Our Elder Justice Task Force has arrested dozens of couriers, but the problem continues to grow.

We need awareness and action. Here’s what to watch for:

· Unexpected pop-ups or calls claiming your computer is hacked
· Urgent threats involving your identity, finances, or criminal accusations
· Instructions to withdraw large sums of money or buy gold
· Requests to hand off assets to a courier or “government agent”
· Demands for secrecy, including instructions to lie to family or bank staff
· Claims of a “gag order” or documents pressuring you not to talk

If this happens to you, remember:

· Stop – Take a moment. Scammers rely on panic and urgency.
· Hang up – Do not stay on the phone or continue communication.
· Tell someone – Contact a trusted family member, friend, or your bank immediately.
· If you have lost money to one of these scams, please report immediately to the FBI at www.IC3.gov and to your local police agency.
Also report the incident to local law enforcement or Adult Protective Services at (800) 339-4661. The sooner you speak up, the better chance we have of stopping the scam and possibly recovering your money.

Let me be clear: no legitimate government agency will ever ask you to convert your savings into gold or hand it to a courier. No real investigator will demand secrecy from your loved ones or financial institution.

These scams are not just theft, they are emotional manipulation that leaves victims feeling isolated and betrayed. We are working tirelessly with our law enforcement partners to hold those responsible accountable, but prevention starts with awareness.

Please share this information with the seniors in your life. A simple conversation could save someone’s life savings.

And remember: Stop. Hang up. Tell someone.

The San Diego Elder Justice Task Force was launched in 2021 and brought together partners including the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office, the FBI, the U.S. Department of Justice, the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office and local law enforcement agencies as well as Adult Protective Services, and the San Diego Law Enforcement Coordination Center.

City of Oceanside Downtown Water and Sewer Replacement – Phase 2

https://www.oceansidechamber.com/member-news/city-of-oceanside-downtown-water-and-sewer-replacement-phase-2

https://www.oceansidechamber.com/member-news/city-of-oceanside-downtown-water-and-sewer-replacement-phase-2#comments

Uncategorized

The City of Oceanside will begin Phase 2 of the Downtown Water and Sewer Replacement Project in March 2026, starting in the alley south of Meyer Street and north of Pacific Street. Construction will take place in phases, with nearby properties receiving advance notice through door hangers. Construction will begin in the alley located south of Meyer Street and north of Pacific Street.
Phase II will replace more than 3 miles of sewer pipes and over 2.5 miles of water pipes, while expanding the downtown recycled water system with nearly one mile of new pipeline. Many of the pipes being replaced are very old, with some sewer lines nearly 100 years old. These upgrades will modernize the system, support future growth, and add new recycled water customers, including public, commercial, and mixed-use residential properties. Recycled water is commonly used for irrigation and helps support Oceanside’s commitment to sustainable and alternative water sources.
Construction for Phase II is anticipated to begin at the end of February 2026 and continue for approximately two years. Work will take place in phases to help minimize impacts in the downtown area. Properties located near active construction will receive advance notification through mailers and door hangers prior to work beginning nearby.
Traffic will generally be maintained throughout construction. Road closures or detours that impact the public will be limited to night work. Daytime construction will be restricted to the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with additional limitations in certain high-traffic areas. No construction will occur west of Myers Street during the busy summer season, and work will also be restricted during popular annual events and weekly downtown markets.
Water and sewer service will be maintained throughout construction. In some cases, brief service interruptions may be necessary during specific phases of work. When anticipated, affected properties will be notified at least 24 hours in advance.
The project cost is roughly $30 million, and will be funded through previously budgeted capital improvement program funds, as well as through state and federal grants.
Please visit the Oceanside Water Utilities webpage for project updates. As part of a multi-county enforcement action, the company agreed to a $4.3 million consumer protection settlement, including a $3 million restitution fund for eligible consumers who lost money under certain solar power purchase agreements.
In cases like this, a restitution fund gives real help to everyday people harmed by deceptive practices, not just symbolic penalties. But justice like this doesn’t happen on its own. It happens because members of the public come forward, and because my District Attorney Consumer Protection Unit takes those reports seriously and has an expert team of prosecutors and investigators to fight against big companies like Tesla, Apple, and Target.
That’s why I want to urge you: if a business has misled you, overcharged you, or violated your trust, please report it.
You can file a consumer complaint on our DA website:
https://www.sdcda.org/preventing/consumer-protection/
When you submit a complaint, you help us spot patterns of misconduct that might otherwise go unnoticed. While we can’t act as your private attorney, your reports often form the foundation for broader enforcement actions that help you and at the same time help thousands of consumers.
What the Consumer Protection Unit Does
Our Consumer Protection Unit investigates and takes action against unlawful business practices in civil cases that seek restitution and penalties, and in criminal cases that can lead to charges against those who defraud the public and obtain restitution.
We handle cases involving:

Scams that target our seniors through a specialized Elder Justice Task Force

False or misleading advertising

Cyber scams through our CATCH team of specialized cyber cops

Unfair pricing or billing practices, especially after a natural disaster

Deceptive contract terms or sales tactics

Environmental violations that harm our communities with toxic waste and more

We have a team of highly experienced professionals dedicated to this mission, so much so that one of our Deputy District Attorneys wrote the authoritative book on consumer protection law itself.
Recent Work That Matters
Over the past year, our unit has been especially active in holding bad actors accountable:

We announced more than $13.6 million in consumer protection judgments against several companies.

We brought fraud charges against a business owner for cheating customers.

We secured a $1 million settlement for overcharging consumers at the point of sale.

And, as noted above, we helped ensure a $3 million consumer restitution fund in the Vivint Solar case.

These results are meaningful but because they reflect real consequences for businesses that break the law and real relief for consumers who suffered harm.
You Have a Role in Consumer Protection
Most investigations start with a complaint from someone just like you. A neighbor, a teacher, a small business owner, a retiree who said, “This doesn’t seem right.” That simple act of reporting can trigger reviews, investigations, and sometimes powerful enforcement actions.
If you think you’ve been misled or harmed by a company, don’t hesitate. File a complaint with us today at the Consumer Protection section of our website.
Your voice helps protect the whole community, not just you.
The DA’s Consumer Protection Unit is made up of Deputy District Attorneys, Investigators and Paralegals dedicated to protecting consumers and law-abiding businesses from fraudulent or unfair business practices. To report a consumer complaint, you can file a complaint online at: https://www.sdcda.org/preventing/consumer-protection/, call (619) 531-3507, or email consumer@sdcda.org.

SUPER STEM SATURDAY

https://www.oceansidechamber.com/member-news/super-stem-saturday

https://www.oceansidechamber.com/member-news/super-stem-saturday#comments

Uncategorized

Discover, Experiment, and Play at Super STEM Saturday! Build and launch a rocket, explore the surface of the sun, and discover why chemistry feels like magic at Super STEM Saturday, happening March 14 from 10 am to 4 pm at California State University San Marcos (CSUSM). The call is emotional, urgent, and terrifying.
Imagine hearing your child’s voice on the phone saying, “Mom, I’ve been arrested,” or “I was in a car crash and need money right now.” The voice sounds real -- because it is -- just digitally copied.
These scams often include stories like:

A grandchild arrested and needing bail

A child in a car accident who needs money for a tow truck or hospital bill

A fake law enforcement call claiming there is a warrant for your arrest

To make the scam even more convincing, criminals can spoof phone numbers, making it look like the call is coming from the actual person or a government agency.
Anyone can be targeted. AI has made scams more convincing, more personal, and harder to detect, but there are steps you can take to protect yourself and your family.
Tips to avoid AI voice and other high-tech scams include:

Create a family code word that must be used in any real emergency.

If a caller claims to be a loved one in trouble, ask for the code word. Criminals use online videos, voicemails, and photos to build convincing fake stories.

Review privacy settings so strangers cannot access your content.

Search your name online to see what information about you is publicly available and remove what you can.

If you’ve been scammed do the following:

Stop sending money immediately.

Report the crime to local law enforcement.

File a report with the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at ic3.gov.

Contact your bank or financial institution right away to try to block or reverse the transaction.

Save all messages, voicemails, receipts, and phone numbers related to the scam.

Scammers are counting on fear, confusion, and new technology to separate you from your money. But inevitably there are cheaters working the system. Sometimes they are rogue contractors, but mostly they are unlicensed fraudsters who cut corners or skip town with your money.

The most common way consumers get ripped off is by trusting someone representing himself as licensed in a trade who wants to be paid up front. Frequently the phony contractor asks to be paid in cash, claiming they can begin work more quickly that way. Unfortunately, we have prosecuted cases where the scammer pockets the money and never comes back.

Before you put off that remodel job for good, here are some tips to help you distinguish the good from the bad.

Make sure your contractor is licensed. Check for disciplinary actions and workers compensation insurance on the Contractors State License Board (CSLB) website (http://cslb.ca.gov/).

Be wary of anyone trying to convince you that since it may be a “small job” they do not need a contractor’s license. Any home improvement project over $1,000 requires a licensed contractor.

Contractors cannot ask for more than 10% of the total cost of the project or $1,000 (whichever is smaller) as a down payment. Do not pay more than that amount before the project begins.

Be wary of door-to-door salesmen offering free inspections. Many times they will claim that there is a “serious” problem such as bad plumbing or leaky roof that needs to be fixed immediately.

Remember that they have an incentive to indicate that a problem exists.

Do not let payments get ahead of the work. Payment schedules and project phases should be detailed in the contract.

Avoid paying in cash. If your contractor asks for cash only, it may be that they are operating outside of the law and do not want to be traced.

Ask for three references from prior customers and then check and verify that those references were satisfied with the contractor and his or her work.

The CSLB created a video to help you with the process of selecting a legitimate contractor for your job.

If you believe you have been scammed by a contractor, file a complaint with the Contractors State License Board.

The DA’s Consumer Protection Unit is made up of Deputy District Attorneys, Investigators and Paralegals dedicated to protecting consumers and law abiding businesses from fraudulent or unfair business practices. This is when predators trick or coerce young people into sending explicit images or videos and then using those images to demand more compromising images that they use for sexual exploitation, to force in-person meetings or to extort money. Once in possession of explicit photos, bad actors threaten to expose the photos to the child’s entire school or family to achieve their demands. Children have become so frightened and traumatized by sextortion that they have contemplated suicide.
In San Diego County and across the nation, reports of to the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force are spiking year-over-year at an unprecedented rate. The task force already is on track to receive over 17,500 tips this year, far higher than last year’s 11,000. While not every report to the task force involves sextortion, the jump in reports is worrisome and it signals to law enforcement that opening to access children through online platforms is widening.
This dramatic increase is a warning sign for every parent and caregiver. Over the last three years, our office has filed extortion cases against 40 defendants, three of which involved minor children. This is a small sampling of the actual extortion that occurs, because not all victims report the incidents to police.
Much of the grooming begins in places where kids feel safe, such as online gaming apps. Predators pose as peers, building trust, and then encourage children to move conversations to private messaging platforms where exploitation begins. That’s why it’s vital for parents to talk openly with their children about the dangers, set clear rules, and stay engaged with their online lives.
Parents should be aware of how sextortion schemes often unfold. Here’s what it looks like:
· A stranger connects with a child through a gaming app, social media, or chat room.
· The predator pretends to be a teen, often sending a fake photo.
· They encourage the child to share personal or explicit images.
· Once an image is shared, the predator demands money or more images under threat of exposure.
· Scammers may demand gift cards, cryptocurrency, or bank transfers.

Tips for parents to protect their children:
· Warn children never to take conversations to private messaging apps where predators gain control. · Learn how to protect your children on NetSmartz.
· Keep devices in common areas so online activity is visible.
· Discuss the risks of online friendships, reminding kids that people online aren’t friends, they are strangers.
· Reassure children that if they make a mistake, they can come to you without fear of punishment.
· Report suspicious behavior immediately to law enforcement or the ICAC Task Force.

If your child is targeted, here are important steps:
· Do not pay. Paying does not make the problem go away.
· Stop communicating immediately with the predator.
· Save all messages, usernames, and evidence. Do not delete them.
· Report the crime to your local police department and to the FBI at www.ic3.gov.
· Support your child emotionally. Victims may feel ashamed or afraid. Remind them it is not their fault.

Sextortion is a cruel crime that preys on fear and shame. By talking openly with your children, setting boundaries, and staying alert to their online interactions, you can help protect them from this growing threat.
Our office is committed to fighting sextortion through prosecution, education, and collaboration with law enforcement partners. Together, we can safeguard our children and stop predators before they cause irreparable harm.
As your District Attorney, I’m committed to increasing communication and accessibility between the DA’s Office and the public. I hope these consumer and public safety tips have been helpful.

INTERFAITH Community Services to Host Community Forumson Homelessness and Federal Funding

https://www.oceansidechamber.com/member-news/interfaith-community-services-to-host-community-forumson-homelessness-and-federal-funding

https://www.oceansidechamber.com/member-news/interfaith-community-services-to-host-community-forumson-homelessness-and-federal-funding#comments

Uncategorized

The free community forums on September 10 in Oceanside and September 16 in Escondido will give residents the opportunity to hear updates on federal funding and its potential impact on North County, ask questions, and share ideas to help build community solutions.ESCONDIDO, CA: Interfaith Community Services, North County’s largest social services agency, will host two free community forums this September:Oceanside on Wednesday, Sept. 10, and in Escondido on Tuesday, Sept. 16. If you are at high risk for prostate cancer, you should start screening earlier.
The prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test is the most common screening method for prostate cancer.
Colon cancer screenings
Cancer experts say people at average risk should start screening at age 45. Finding cancer early improves outcomes. Schedule regular colonoscopies to catch any signs early.
Lung cancer screening
The US Preventive Services Task Force recommends screening for adults 50 and older who are at risk for lung cancer.
Annual low-dose CT scans are recommended if you have a history of smoking 1 pack a day for 20 years, also referred to as 20-pack year smoking history. This recommendation holds whether you are currently smoking or have quit within the past 15 years.
Lung cancer is one of the most common cancers in the U.S. and also the deadliest. However, it should begin earlier for those with risk factors, including children and teens. Risk factors include being overweight or having a family history of diabetes.
Depression
Stress, anxiety and depression can harm your health if not treated. Men may face mental health issues in different ways and may hesitate to seek help.
Recognizing the signs and discussing them openly with your doctor can enhance management of these conditions.
Mental health experts recommend all adults undergo screening for depression.

Lifestyle factors
Lifestyle factors play a major role in men’s health and their need for screenings. Eating a balanced diet and exercising often can lower the risk of many health problems. These healthy habits help control weight, lower blood pressure and reduce the chance of heart disease.
Smoking and drinking too much alcohol can increase health risks. By planning and making smart choices, you can have tasty and nutritious meals without spending too much money.
There are several ways to do this. You can save money by buying staple foods in bulk, finding sales, cooking at home instead of eating out and more.
If you need help, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s MyPlate program offers tips on meal planning and eating healthy on a budget. It recommends dividing your plate into sections. Half should be filled with fruits and vegetables, a quarter with grains and a quarter with protein. You can add low-fat dairy on the side.
“There are many ways to fill up half of your plate with nutritious fruits and vegetables and other important food groups without spending too much,” says Michael Varon, MD, a family medicine physician at Scripps Coastal Medical Center Jefferson in Oceanside. “Fruits and vegetables are especially important because they provide vitamins and nutrients and can help reduce your risk of certain diseases.”

Follow these seven tips to save money while choosing nutritious foods.
1. Buy produce in season
Many people struggle to include enough fruits and vegetables in their diets. Don’t let price be a reason.
Buy in-season produce to save money and enjoy the freshest flavors. Learn what’s in season now and remember to buy only what you can eat before it spoils.
If you’re looking for ideas for meals, explore the health benefits of plant-based diets like the Mediterranean diet.
You might consider growing your own produce if you don’t mind getting your hands a little dirty. You’ll have a steady supply of fresh produce that way.
2. Plan weekly meals and stick to your shopping list
Planning your meals ahead of time can save you time and money when you go grocery shopping. Make a grocery list of healthy, budget-friendly foods and stick to it.
Check what you already have in the fridge and cabinets and avoid buying things you don’t need. Leftovers can be tasty too, so don’t forget about them.
3. Include frozen and non-perishable foods
Stock up on canned and frozen fruits and vegetables, which can be cheaper and last longer than fresh produce.
“Look for frozen vegetables without added sauces, gravies, butter, or cream and packaged fruits that do not have added sugars,” Dr. Varon says.
4. Find budget friendly recipes
Eating healthy doesn't have to be boring. Try new recipes that are affordable.
“Create a list of budget-friendly recipes to try that are healthy and that you know your family enjoys,” Dr. Varon advises.
For budget-friendly recipe ideas, try these healthy options.

Fish tacos

Mediterranean chicken and white bean salad

Oven-roasted vegetables

Salmon burgers and sweet potato oven fries

Potato spinach casserole

Enchilada bake

Strawberry banana parfait

Fruit smoothie

5. Resist fast food on busy days
Lack of time to prepare meals is often the main reason for eating out. If that’s the case, create a list of fast, simple healthy recipes that you can prepare at a moment’s notice at home. “These are healthy meals you can prepare in advance to heat and serve on your busiest days,” Dr. Varon says.
Homemade meals are much more affordable than fast food, which can be high in salt and fat. Save money by buying fresh and healthy ingredients at the grocery store instead.
6. Diversify your protein sources
Proteins are important for a healthy body and can be found in a variety of foods. Most of us eat enough meat, poultry and eggs, but we often don't consume enough seafood, nuts, seeds and soy products. These foods can help you get more nutrients and save money.
Vary your protein choices and make sure to include seafood as the main protein food at least twice a week. Seafoods are more reasonably priced when you adjust portion sizes.
If you enjoy meat, choose lean cuts. Ground beef should be 93% lean or higher. Nuts, beans and soy products are also good sources of protein and cost less than premium beef cuts.
7. Shop outside the big box
Local farmer’s markets and specialty stores often offer fresh produce at lower prices. Check the National Farmers Market Directory for locations near you.
“Much of learning to eat healthy on a budget involves simply planning ahead and learning new shopping habits,” Dr. Varon says. “Once they become ingrained, you may be surprised by how much you save in both time and money.”

San Diego Strike Force and Frontwave Arena Announce Three-Year Partnership

https://www.oceansidechamber.com/member-news/san-diego-strike-force-and-frontwave-arena-announce-three-year-partnership

https://www.oceansidechamber.com/member-news/san-diego-strike-force-and-frontwave-arena-announce-three-year-partnership#comments

Uncategorized

Bringing Professional Indoor Football Excitement to Oceanside **Oceanside, CA** – The San Diego Strike Force, a professional team in the Indoor Football League (IFL) and Frontwave Arena, the new state-of-the-art sports and entertainment venue in Oceanside, California, is excited to announce a three-year partnership. Two servings of fruit and three servings of vegetables could get the job done, according to the study published in the AHA journal Circulation.
While portion recommendations may vary, the message from health experts is clear: We need to work in more fruits and vegetables per day into our diets.
There are many ways to do this. Some of the most popular diets, including the Mediterranean, paleo and keto diets, emphasize consuming fruits and vegetables. Some plants and vegetables are so rich in nutrients that they are often referred to as superfoods. Plant-based diets in general are recognized for their health benefits.
Why don’t we eat more fruits and vegetables?
Almost all fruits and vegetables — fresh, frozen, canned, dried and juiced — can meet your daily dietary needs.
Despite our many choices, we still come up short when it comes to getting enough fruits and vegetables. The reasons vary.
Our fast-food culture makes it hard to consume the right amount of produce. At home, fresh fruits and vegetables can add up in costs and be time-consuming to prepare. There are also people who just don't like the taste or texture of some vegetables.
If cost is an issue, there are many ways to eat healthy without spending a lot. Buy in-season produce, stick to your shopping list at the store, stock up on canned or frozen fruits and vegetables and create budget friendly recipes.
Is juice healthy for you?
Drinking fresh juice has some health benefits. But it is not recommended for everyone, especially people with diabetes. Fruit juices tend to contain a large amount of sugar, which raises blood sugar levels very quickly.
“As a general rule, eating whole fruit is healthier than drinking fruit juice or fruit smoothies,” says Dr. Harris.
Talk to your doctor if you have any questions about juicing for weight loss or how much fruits and vegetables should be in your diet. If you choose to boost your produce intake with juice, read the nutrition label on any product bought at the store. Check the serving size and calorie count and look for added sugar content.
Danger of added sugars
Many juice products are considered sugar-sweetened drinks because they have little juice content and are primarily made up of water with added sugars. Too many added sugars can lead to weight gain and poor nutrition.
Added sugars should make up no more than 10 percent of your daily calories, according to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Most American adults currently exceed that limit.
The healthiest type of juice is 100 percent juice or juice with little to no added sugars. But even 100 percent juice has limits.
“When you drink strained juice, you aren’t getting fiber, so it’s very easy to pile calories onto your diet,” says Dr. Harris.
The Dietary Guidelines suggests that at least half of the recommended amount of fruit should come from whole fruit rather than 100 percent juice.
There are many ways to cut your sugar intake, including skipping sugary snacks and staying out of the processed food aisles.
For more information about Scripps Clinic Center for Weight Management call 858-794-1250.

6 Simple Ways to Stay Hydrated

https://www.oceansidechamber.com/member-news/6-simple-ways-to-stay-hydrated

https://www.oceansidechamber.com/member-news/6-simple-ways-to-stay-hydrated#comments

Uncategorized

(Source - Scripps Health) San Diego’s sunny and warm weather makes it perfect for outdoor activities for people of all ages. However, the region is no stranger to heatwaves or very hot weather, so it’s important to drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration.
Since our bodies are primarily composed of water, maintaining proper hydration is vital, especially during exercise or physical activity in the sun. Dehydration can occur when the body loses too much fluid through sweat. Those at higher risk include athletes, individuals working in hot conditions, older adults, children and people with chronic illnesses.
“Fluids are essential to keeping the vital organs active,” says Stacie Ly, MD, an internal medicine physician at Scripps Coastal Medical Center Carlsbad. “Dehydration can be mild, moderate or severe, based on how much of your body’s fluid is lost or not replaced. Severe cases can lead to a hospital trip for IV fluids and could sometimes result in kidney damage or nervous system problems.”

How much water should you drink a day?
According to Dr. Ly, there’s something to the old “eight glasses a day” adage. For adults, that would be a half-gallon — 64 ounces, or eight (8-ounce) glasses. It’s a good start but not a hard rule. You may need more if you’re exercising or the weather is especially hot.
The amount of water you need to drink daily depends on several factors, such as age, gender, size, activity level and weather. Pregnancy, breastfeeding and health also impact your water intake.
The best advice is to drink water when you’re thirsty and stay hydrated throughout the day to prevention dehydration, according to Dr. Ly.
And if you’re working out intensely or dehydration symptoms like headache or lightheadedness have already set in, electrolytes are key.
“Water is nice, but when you’re dehydrated you also need electrolytes,” Dr. Ly says. Skip the diet drinks, though. Sugar helps the electrolytes absorb.
Six tips for staying hydrated
The best defense against dehydration is prevention. Follow these six tips to stay safe and healthy, especially when temperatures — or your activity levels — increase:
1. Don’t wait till you’re thirsty to drink
By the time you feel thirsty, you’re already slightly dehydrated. Sip water steadily throughout the day and drink more fluids than usual when the weather is hot, especially if you’re active.
If you need a reminder to stay hydrated, carry a reusable water bottle with you and set a timer on your phone to notify you to drink water throughout the day.
2. Flavor your water
If plain water tastes boring to you, you can add flavor with fresh fruits or a splash of fruit juice. You can also consume clear broths, ice pops or sports drinks (especially if you’re doing intense exercise). Just make sure to limit caffeine and alcohol.
3. Eat water-rich fruits and vegetables.
Certain fruits and vegetables are high in water content and nutrients. Watermelon, strawberries, cantaloupe, peaches and pineapples are fruits with high-water content. Water-rich vegetables include cucumbers, leafy greens, radishes, celery, zucchini and tomatoes.
4. Stay inside when it gets too hot
Avoid sun exposure, especially between 10 am and 2 pm, when the rays are strongest. Instead, plan outdoor activities in the early morning or evening.
Consider exercising indoors with air conditioning instead of exercising outside in scorching hot weather. If you usually hike or run outside, try swimming instead.
Stay indoors to avoid the heat, even if you’re not working out. If you don’t have air conditioning at home, try a shopping center, movie theater or public library.
5. Dress for the weather
Wear light, loose-fitting clothing that lets your skin breathe. Dark colors absorb heat, so stick with lighter shades. Wear a wide-brimmed hat in the sun to keep your head cool and use plenty of sunscreen to avoid sunburn, which can increase your skin temperature and make it harder to stay cool.
6. Be aware of the signs of dehydration
Dehydration is common and can affect anyone, but some people are more at risk, especially children and older adults.
Children are at higher risk of dehydration because they have a higher percentage of water in their bodies, which decreases with age. Children also may not always realize they are thirsty and may forget to drink enough water.
Older adults are at higher risk of dehydration due to age-related health problems and decreased thirst sensation.
“Older people may forget to drink water or not recognize their thirst,” says Dr. Ly. “They might also neglect to prevent dehydration the same way a younger person would. Be cognizant about that if you have a parent or older person around.”
Keep an eye out for any of these signs of dehydration:

Darker-than-usual urine

Not urinating despite steadily drinking water

Muscle cramps

Bad breath

Fatigue

Fever or chills

Craving sweets

Dry mouth/skin

Fast heartbeat

Irritability

Confusion

Drowsiness

Anyone with a fever, vomiting or diarrhea should drink plenty of fluids. Change the way you cook: Turn off the oven and stovetop as much as possible. Relying on microwaves, slow cookers, backyard grills or air fryers are great ways to heat up your food but not your home. If you’re going to use your oven, do it sparingly and during the coolest part of the day.
2. Change how you wash your clothes: Use cold water to wash your clothes so you don’t have to pay to heat the water. Cold water helps reduce wrinkles and remove stains. Washing in cold also helps your clothes last longer, prolong vibrancy and maintain their shape and size. Always aim for full loads of laundry and consider line drying them.

3. In warmer temps, fans should be set counter-clockwise for the best cooling effect. Don’t forget to change the direction to clockwise when temps drop in cooler months because the fan pushes heat down.

Use occupancy sensors: Install occupancy sensors for your lights. PINC AI researchers measured clinical and operational performance in 10 areas, using publicly available information from Medicare cost reports, Medicare Provider Analysis and Review data, and core measures and patient satisfaction data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Care Compare website. In 2014, Scripps opened the Leichtag Foundation Critical Care Pavilion at the hospital, which included a new emergency department and 36 inpatient rooms. In 2016, the hospital expanded its surgical services department by adding two new state-of-the-art operating rooms, bringing the hospital’s total to six.
