After the mass shooting in Half Moon Bay in January, the deplorable conditions in which farmworkers live, work and how they are paid came to national attention. One of the points that was highlighted in the subsequent media coverage was the low pay the mushroom farmworkers were receiving. In his trip to Half Moon Bay, California’s Governor saw firsthand the disgraceful working and living conditions of the farmworkers, noting that many were getting paid as little $9 an hour -- well below the state minimum wage of $15.50 an hour. Strada Education Network selected MiraCosta College's Biomanufacturing program to receive a grant through Strada’s Employer and Community College Partnership Challenge. Strada awarded this $400,000 grant as part of an effort to support innovative collaborations across the country between community colleges and employers in their region. MiraCosta College also will participate with Strada in a community of practice to learn from other select community college-employer partnerships around the country.

Organization founded this year helps to subsidize housing and support for seniors
CARLSBAD, Calif. (Nov. 11, 2022) – Senior Housing Relief for Elders (SHORE), a new nonprofit to help subsidize housing and support for seniors, has launched its first program aimed at aiding senior veterans to find housing ahead of Veterans Day. The Veterans Housing Aid Program is currently available for qualifying senior veterans in San Diego County. SACRAMENTO – The California Department of Housing and Community Development (CDHCD) awarded the City of Vista $1,334,911 million in funds from the Permanent Local Housing Allocation (PLHA) program. The PLHA program provides financial assistance and allocates 70 percent of the ongoing revenue deposited in the Building Homes and Jobs Trust Fund directly to local governments.
