Every year, Vans, an American manufacturer of skateboarding shoes and related apparel, hosts the Vans Custom Culture design contest. The contest aims to inspire and empower student creativity through art and design, and to bring much needed attention to struggling arts education budgets. The Custom Culture contest spans nationwide, encouraging students to take a specific theme and let their imagination run wild on a blank Vans shoe canvas. Out of several thousand submissions nationwide, El Camino High School was selected as 1 of 500 schools to receive two pairs of Vans shoes to customize. These top two designs will then be submitted back to Vans who will choose the top 50 designs advancing to a public vote. The winner of the contest receives $75,000 for their school’s art program, a BBQ and a surprise musical performance from Vans. FOX 5 photojournalist Josh Jenkins got a firsthand look at some of the student’s custom designs.
Currently, the contest is in it "Image Submission" stage. However, the top 50 shoes open to public vote starts April 22nd! Be sure to check back and see if the El Camino High School's student submissions made the cut!
