By Emerald Lowe, Director of Membership and Oceanside Young Professionals Today, the modern young professional is almost an enigma to other generations. Millennials are making waves on a global scale when it comes to workplace culture, social and political reform, and every day business practices. Based on the feedback of the business community and the echoes of major media outlets, younger generations of professionals are considering the value of the experience itself and ethical results versus the direct return when making any type of decision, whether it be a career path, product purchase, or nonprofit donation. It’s not enough for employers to add additional benefits and higher wages, they must now consider how they are shaping a culture in order to attract the right talent. The importance of mission statements, workplace cultures, as well as meeting social and environmental responsibilities have never been greater.
Over the past twenty years thousands of local entrepreneurs and business owners have visited The North San Diego Small Business Development Center (SBDC) to help them start, manage and grow their businesses. I was one of those entrepreneurs and the information and support I received was priceless. I am now celebrating a decade in business. The SBDC consultants have been with me and thousands of small business owners every step of the way. There is no cost to entrepreneurs and small business owners for private one-on-one business advising and most of the training and resources available to them.

Chair, Oceanside Young Professionals Network From initiatives that aim to save Oceanside beach sand to the thriving farm-to-table scene, there is always a new topic to learn about in our growing city. Over the past year, the Oceanside Chamber of Commerce has launched a program called the Oceanside Young Professionals Network (OYPN). The OYPN is designed to connect young professionals with each other through fun networking and event opportunities and also connect them to the issues that affect us most, professionally and personally. In recent months, the Oceanside Chamber has had the honor of partnering with numerous community organizations in support of the Oceanside Promise’s Latino Young Men Success Initiative Pilot Program.
LAMVIN, Inc. is a manufacturer of custom architectural acoustical products here in Oceanside, California. Opened in 1961, the company’s name was derived from Laminating Vinyl. Under new ownership in the 1980s, acoustical products became their primary focus. (If you’ve ever eaten in a noisy restaurant or café, you can most often attribute the noise level to a lack of “acoustic absorption”. Acoustic absorption reduces sound and echoes by adding soft materials to hard surfaces.)
