To Go Tankless or Not... That is the Question

​Before we jump into this. Ask yourself this question. How long do you wait for your shower to “heat up” before getting in? For me, it’s about 3 to 5 minutes. For some reason the kitchen sink takes longer to heat up. But my point is that, most of us, that have a standard water heater with no re-circulation system, it takes a while for the hot water get to where we want it. So, you may have heard about tankless systems, heck even considered it.

So, what can you expect from a tankless system? First, a small amount of space needed to place the tankless water heater. A tankless unit can be 60% less space than a traditional 40-50 gallon water heater. You can also expect about the same maintenance, maybe a tad more. It’s usually a good idea to clean the filter of the tankless system once every three years.

You can also expect a lower utility bill, about 50% less in natural gas usage and can range from 20-37% in water savings. Installing: if replacing and existing 50 gallon water heater, typically takes no more than one day. If you want, you can relocate the tankless system to outside of the house if you choose. Also, you can monitor in real time, the usage and the easily set the desired temperature and can be linked to your smart phone.

Cost? You may be looking at about 800 to $1,000 more than a standard 50 gallon tank. If you want the re-circulating system, you would be looking additional $800 to $1,000. Whoa… that’s a lot of money. But what about the savings? $100-$200 per year on gas, then 15%-30% on water so let’s say $40 per month on water $480 per month on less water usage $680 per year potential savings. So, it could pay for itself in nearly 3 years. Then add savings every year beyond that. It’s possible.
