By District Attorney Summer Stephan
As your District Attorney, I’m committed to increasing communication and accessibility between the DA’s Office and you, the community. One way I have been doing that is through this monthly column, where I provide consumer tips on public safety matters. There’s no end to the ideas scammers come up with to cheat you out of money. While everyone can be a victim of a scam, seniors are particularly targeted and can be more trusting and vulnerable. A common practice is to prey on emotions and to create a sense of urgency. For example, the caller will say a grandchild is in trouble in another country and needs to be bailed out or will pretend to be from the IRS saying you owe back taxes. All you have to do is purchase gift cards and then provide the numbers on the back of the card. The gift cards can be from anywhere: iTunes, Amazon or any large retailer such as Walmart, Home Depot, or Target. MiraCosta College’s International Languages and Film departments present these compelling films this spring:
In California, most greenhouse gas (GHGs) emissions (45 percent) are from the transportation sector. The next largest source, approximately 24 percent, comes from buildings that rely on the combustion of natural gas to generate heat. So, to cut GHGs and push towards a zero-emissions future, adopting heat pumps for space and water heating could be a significant step.
Heat pumps don’t rely on combustion to work. Instead, they use electricity and refrigerants to move heat from one area to another; making them more efficient and safer than their gas counterparts. Today’s heat pumps are typically over 100 percent efficient. The MiraCosta College Theatre Department presents Into the Woods, music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, book by James Lapine. Ethos … Pathos … Logos
A new class! Why do bad things happen to good people? How does one stand up to evil? Are you interested in passion, love, or romance? Or… maybe you have gone through terrible tragedies, intense suffering, loss and grief? How about a Shakespearean-like drama that rejects exclusivism/radical nationalism while teaching racial tolerance? Does life ever seem like an endless groundhog day where nothing makes sense? These questions and more will be addressed as we look at the wisdom literature of ancient Israel. Old Testament Writings kicks off this Wednesday from 6:15 - 7:30 p.m. There is no cost. Study materials are provided. Bring a friend. Feel free to bring your supper if pressed for time. |
