Scholar Athlete: MiraCosta College's Jovanhy Martinez Earns Recognition

Jovanhy Martinez is committed to hard work, and it shows. A defender for the men’s soccer team, who graduated in May with a 3.96 GPA in Mechanical Engineering, Martinez was recently named MiraCosta College’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year. “It’s a huge honor,” Jovanhy says. “I wasn’t expecting it.”

John Redford has 20 years of experience as a real estate investor, residential property developer, and manager. He and his wife Margo have been North County residents for over 30 years, and have lived in the Fire Mountain area of Oceanside since 2014. John holds degrees in music and library science and serves as organist at SonRise Christian Fellowship in Fallbrook. San Juan Capistrano, CA – U.S. Representative Mike Levin (D-CA) released a report today by his San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS) Task Force, which includes proposals from local stakeholders and experts to improve safety at the San Onofre facility and remove the spent nuclear fuel from the region. Rep. Levin formed the Task Force during his first month in office with the goal of driving solutions to move and safely store sensitive waste located at San Onofre. He appointed Rear Admiral Leendert “Len” Hering Sr., USN (Ret.) and former U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) Chairman Gregory Jaczko to lead the Task Force as co-chairs.

North County Food Bank 'Drive Out Hunger' Golf Tournament

The North County Food Bank will be hosting their annual Drive Out Hunger Golf Classic at the Shadowridge Golf Club in Vista on July 20th. This event is a great opportunity to bring the community together and have taken every precaution necessary to ensure safety for all attendees. If you're looking to get involved, a business or organization can sponsor a hole for as little as $500 which includes signage, and show their commitment and support to the community. Proceeds from the tournament will go back to North County Food Bank support and COVID relief. We’re still feeding nearly 600,000 people every month, which includes seniors, military, working-poor families, children, and those recently unemployed and furloughed. Learn more below:

Every second and fourth Wednesday of the month, the Business Sector Support Team for the County of San Diego holds an informational telebriefing to help inform and answer questions for the community about important COVID-19 topics. This week's speakers included Gary S. Johnston, Chief Resilience Officer / Agency Representative, San Diego Office of Emergency Services, and Dr. Sayone Thihalolipavan, Medical Consultant, Public Health Services, Health and Human Services Agency. To recap, the meeting discussed: 
  • The continually monitoring of the 13 triggers in the COVID-19 Triggers Dashboard.
    • Locally San Diego is seeing an increase in COVID-19 cases and community outbreaks.
  • On June 18, 2020, the state of California released mandatory information on face coverings. Read more.​​​​​​​
    • All state guidelines will be updated to align with the new face covering requirement.
  • There are exemptions to the face covering requirement. Please refer to the Public Health Order​​​​​​​ for more information.
  • There will be no additional state guidelines until after July 4th.
  • Fireworks, picnics and barbecues are allowed with household members for the fourth of July.
  • The state released a guidance on responding to COVID-19 in the workplace for employers.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Oceanside, Leichtag Foundation Partner to Feed Oceanside Youth

Oceanside, CA (June 22, 2020)- Boys & Girls Clubs of Oceanside (BGCO) has received a $10,000 grant from The Leichtag Foundation to support their emergency food program. BGCO has been providing meals to the community’s youth since May 4th, offering fresh-made lunches and snacks to children under the age of 18. Due to this generous funding, BGCO will continue to provide curbside lunch pick up throughout the summer. Since beginning the program, BGCO has served over 12,000 meals and snacks.
