Many veterans in Oceanside are hidden in the crowds. Please come forward on this one occasion and help us recognize you and your fellow veterans in a 2020 calendar. We would like to publish this calendar by Veterans Day 2019, so please hurry.
 This is an opportunity to meet and chat with elected officials.  Erica Alfaro is MiraCosta College. A single mom and one-time high school dropout, Alfaro turned to MiraCosta College when she heeded her parents’ advice about the importance of a good education, and has gone on to earn a bachelor’s degree from California State University, San Marcos and a master’s degree from San Diego State University. Her iconic photo in cap and gown with her farmworker parents in a Carlsbad strawberry field after she earned her master’s degree went viral and made headlines around the world.
 MiraCosta College is offering the following music concerts this fall. Unless noted otherwise, all concerts will be held in the Concert Hall, Bldg. 2400, on the Oceanside Campus, 1 Barnard Drive. Oceanside “Senior of the Year” nomination forms are being accepted and are available at both El Corazon and Country Club Senior Centers in Oceanside, or online. Nominations are being requested for Oceanside seniors, age 62 or older, who have contributed to their community through volunteer work.
The Oceanside Public Library invites the community for a screening of the film Stand and Deliver on Saturday, September 21 at 2:00 p.m. in the Civic Center Library Foundation Room at 330 N. Coast Highway. The film is based on the true life of high school math teacher Jaime Escalante who, against all odds, successfully taught his students calculus and helped them achieve their goal of passing the AP Calculus exam.

 SACRAMENTO – After the California State Senate approved Assembly Bill 5 (Gonzalez) tonight which will significantly limit the ability of Californians to work as independent contractors, Senator Patricia Bates (R-Laguna Niguel) issued the following statement:
 Roadtrip Nation is coming to MiraCosta College. As part of a partnership with the California Community Colleges that included a three-week summer tour for a documentary detailing how notable community college graduates found their field of work, the nonprofit Roadtrip Nation will be parking its signature green RV at the Oceanside Campus on September 26, to introduce its Roadmap to Careers tool and other resources aimed at helping students focus on a pathway to a profession for which they have a passion.

 When it comes to providing for hungry students, MiraCosta College is kicking it up a notch with a new Mobile Food Pantry to complement services that already include a MiraCosta Cares Farmers Market and a long-established campus pantry that provides an emergency sack lunch or snack for any student in need of a meal.
 SACRAMENTO – Governor Gavin Newsom has signed into law Senate Bill 141 by Senator Patricia Bates (R-Laguna Niguel) that will require all inmates convicted of a sexually violent offense to be administered a comprehensive risk assessment before their parole hearing.
Whatever the hurdle, many people never finish high school, only to discover that the degree they are missing is stalling their career. But now, adult learners can study for and take their high school equivalency test through the MiraCosta College Community Learning Center and walk next door to the college’s new testing center and take their exam--all for free.
