Sophia and her children joined Solutions for Change 3 years ago, after Sophia suffered through a mentally, emotionally, physically, and sexually abusive relationship. "I was falling apart on every level." Sophia was in banking but found herself unemployed and at a crossroads with her career. She had a dream to be a hair dresser and "Solutions for Change allowed me to take the time to go to school and become a licensed barber and cosmetologist. Solutions for Change has made me feel like Sophia. I am still me, but wiser, stronger and better than when I began. Before Solutions, I felt like I was losing everything, but in the end, I gained so much more."
Sophia was recently able to buy a new car and is making plans to move out of our North Coast Terrace complex and into her own housing in the very near future. Looking back, her favorite memory will always be her first Christmas in the program because it was the first Christmas she had with her family that was not laced with trauma, but instead full of joy, magic, love and community. Over the years, her kids have been able to receive individualized therapy and between that and seeing the stability of their mother, they have been thriving in school, gymnastics and violin lessons. They are above their reading comprehension levels, extremely social, and bring a positive energy everywhere they go.
Covid-19 has impacted us all. And many, like Sophia as a hairdresser, are out of work and wondering about their next steps. If you are looking for ways to help, consider helping families like Sophia's during this challenging time.
