OMA works in partnership with the Oceanside Unified School District to offer two dynamic, arts-integrated educational programs—Literacy Through Art (LTA) to all third-graders and ArtQuest to all fifth-graders in the district, connecting with an astounding 2,500 students on an annual basis. LTA tackles the literacy crisis through OMA’s partnership with the Oceanside Public Library, providing alternative ways to connect with literacy skills through dynamic and experiential activities that focus on visually-rich artwork and culturally-responsive literature. ArtQuest is an interactive STEAM-focused program designed for students to experience art in OMA’s galleries through a scientific lens, transforming the museum into a learning laboratory that aligns with classroom science and literacy standards. With funding from individual donors and foundations, OMA developed a digital version of LTA for this school year, including a five-part video series, shot on location at the museum and the library, and produced by our local media outlet KOCT. This allowed OMA educators to take the museum to the students. Will you help us do the same with ArtQuest? There are five months left in the 2020-2021 school year, and your donation will make a difference in the lives of 1,300 Oceanside fifth-graders. “The Literacy Through Art program was so beneficial to the third-grade students in Oceanside...I have a struggling reader in my class who, when he saw the artwork at OMA, he was so excited to be able to talk about his thoughts and to examine the stories in each painting...He just felt so proud of himself.” —Luz Miller, third-grade teacher at Mission Elementary School WHY INVEST IN OMA WITH A YEAR-END DONATION?
In spite of the challenges 2020 has presented, OMA has proven resilient and had a meaningful impact by engaging local youth, offering inspiration during isolation, and demonstrating unparalleled growth in essential community connections. Your investment now will support the creative capital needed to persevere as we continue to provide meaningful impact with community engagement, crucial education initiatives, and innovative programming in 2021.
