Brings deep experience as a health care business executive and Navy nurse Former health business executive and Navy nurse John Boyer, Ph.D., was recently elected to the Scripps Health Board of Trustees for a three-year term.
“I am honored to welcome John Boyer to the Scripps Health Board of Trustees,” said Chris Van Gorder, president and CEO of Scripps Health. “He brings to our organization multiple decades of experience in health care delivery and an immense depth of knowledge at a critical time of change and transformation in our industry.” Boyer has spent more than 45 years working in health care, including critical roles leading and growing the health services business of MAXIMUS Inc., which assists federal, state and local government agencies in serving citizens who are eligible to receive publicly funded health and human services benefits through programs such as Medicare, Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program. Earlier in his career, Boyer served as director of health services financing policy at the Pentagon and director of the Health Manpower Division of the Navy Bureau of Medicine and Surgery. He also has held a host of clinical and academic positions over a 24-year career as a U.S. Navy nurse. He currently serves as chairman of the board of directors of the MAXIMUS Foundation, an independent, non-profit arm of MAXIMUS Inc. The foundation was created in 2000 to provide financial assistance through competitive grants to organizations that serve low-income or otherwise disadvantaged individuals and families. Boyer completed his Ph.D. in public administration at The American University. He also holds master’s degrees in both management and nursing, and a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics education. In his personal life, Boyer works with several philanthropic and nonprofit organizations including the Parkinson’s Foundation of the National Capital Area; Health eVillages, where he is vice chair of the Board of Advisors; and the Leadership Council of Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights, which awarded him the organization’s prestigious Ripple of Hope Award in 2013. Boyer and his wife, Sarah, live in San Diego.
