MiraCosta College Board Celebrates $25,000 Student Scholarship, Elects New Leadership, & Announces Trustee Resignation

The MiraCosta Community College District’s Board of Trustees convened on December 14, 2023, for its regular meeting, during which several significant announcements and events occurred.

Nursing Student Awarded $25,000 Bimbo USA College Grant

The Board meeting began with MiraCosta College nursing student Anthony Gonzalez's $25,000 check presentation from Bimbo College Grant. This grant, part of the Bimbo USA College Grant Sweepstakes, was presented during a special event at the meeting. Gonzalez expressed his gratitude and excitement, noting this grant's significant impact on his academic journey and personal life. 

Leadership Reorganization within the Board


The Board underwent a leadership reorganization, with Trustee Rick Cassarrepresenting Area 2 (including Solana Beach, Cardiff, and Rancho Santa Fe) being selected by his peers as the new Board President. A first-generation college student and first- generation American, Trustee Cassar brings a wealth of experience from his tenure in the San Diego Community College District.
Additionally, Trustee Raye Clendening, representing Area 6, which includes north Oceanside, was voted Vice President of the Board. Her extensive and respected career in education includes her roles as a teacher and principal in the San Diego area and her work with Oceanside Unified School District.
 
Board Vacancy and Call for Applications


The Board formally announced the upcoming vacancy due to the resignation of Trustee Dr. William "Bill" Fischer, effective January 2, 2024. Dr. Fischer, representing Trustee Area 7, which covers central Oceanside, submitted his resignation on December 5. The Board is now seeking qualified candidates to fill this vacancy for the remainder of Dr. Fischer's term, which concludes in November 2026.
 
Interested applicants must be registered to vote and reside in MiraCosta Community College Trustee Area 7, including the central portion of Oceanside. Visit the Trustee Area 7 Map for details. Interested individuals are invited to submit a letter of interest, resume, and an application packet to Julie Bollerud, Executive Assistant to the Superintendent/President, at

Applications must be received by 5 pm on February 8, 2024. Candidates may also include a letter of recommendation in their application package.
