MiraCosta College Offers Community Education Enrichment Courses in Hobbies and Skills

​​MiraCosta College Community Education is offering the following hobbies and skills, not-for-credit, courses this fall:
Beginning Ukulele
Do you have a ukulele sitting in your house and would like to learn how to play it? Jam on the beach with friends and show off what you have learned. This course is open to those students who would like to learn to play the ukulele. Fee: $99. Early Bird Special $90 (Register BEFORE 8/27 for this rate.) Supplies: A $10 materials fee will be collected in class. Please bring your own ukulele, tuner, 3-ring binder, notebook, and pencil with eraser to class. Location: San Elijo Campus, Room 201. Time: 8 Tuesdays, 9/3–10/22, 6:30–8 PM.

Watercolor and More
Mature Adult All skill levels are welcome, even first timers. Would you like to paint with confidence by learning extremely fun and easy techniques to achieve quality results? Are you looking for a way to reduce stress and have a relaxing and creative experience in a supportive group? Then this is the class for YOU!
Individual attention will be given to each student. You will be delighted with your successful paintings! Fee: $89. Early Bird Special $75 (Register BEFORE 8/28 for class start date 9/3 and BEFORE 10/15 for class start date 10/22.) Supplies: A supplies list will be included with your student confirmation upon registration. Location: La Colonia Park, Conference Room. Time Options: 6 Tuesdays, 9/3–10/15, 1:30–3:30 PM No class on 10/8 or 6 Tuesdays, 10/22–11/26, 1:30–3:30 PM.

Beginning Upholstery
Learn the craft of upholstery in this interesting and informative hands-on class. This class will focus on the basic fundamentals, techniques, and terminology of upholstery and how to properly plan and execute a project. This class is suitable for students new to the field, as well as the DIYer. Bring your own projects to class to work on. First time project suggestions are: wing, side, and dining chairs; stools; benches; ottomans; cushions; and upholstered accessories are recommended. Those students entering the field will begin to prepare a professional portfolio. Upholstery of sofas and large items (no recliners) are reserved for advanced students. Topics include tools, terms and supplies; overview of sewing machines; measuring and estimating; pattern layout (charting); and selecting fabrics. Note: Please bring binder and paper for notes. Shopping resources for supplies will be given. Fee: $185. Early Bird Special $175 (Register BEFORE 8/28 for this rate.) Supplies: A $20 materials fee will be collected in class. Limited supplies included. Location: Landes Recreation Center 2855 Cedar Road, Oceanside. Time: 8 Tuesdays, 9/3–10/22, 12–4 PM.

Upholstery—All Levels
Suitable for beginner students, the DIYer, advanced students, and those already in the field. Classes focus on styling, identifying different types of fabrics and furniture styles, and furniture building techniques and construction. Beginner students will learn basic fundamentals, techniques, terminology, and how to plan and executive a project. Advanced students will build on their intermediate knowledge, while learning additional, more difficult techniques. Both beginner and advanced students will gain a working knowledge of wood finishes and minor wood restoration. Those students already in the field will be adding to their current portfolio, as well as editing its content as skills improve. Upholstery of sofas and large items are
scheduled one item at a time on a proven skills basis (no recliners). Note: Please bring binder and paper for notes. Shopping resources for supplies will be given. Fee: $185. Early Bird Special $175 (Register BEFORE 8/30 for this rate.) Supplies: A $20 materials fee will be collected in class. Limited supplies included. Location: Landes Recreation Center 2855 Cedar Road Oceanside. Time: 8 Thursdays, 9/5–10/24, 5–9 PM.


Painting in Oil and Acrylics
All experience levels are welcome. If you are interested in learning more about painting in oil and acrylic, this class is for you! New students, as well as seasoned painters, will benefit from learning about supplies, color mixing, composition, values, and techniques, including brushstroke, dry brush, glazing, and more through demonstrations and hands-on practice. Fee: $160. Early Bird Special $135 (Register BEFORE 8/30 for class start date 9/5 and BEFORE 10/18 for class start date 10/24.) Supplies: A supplies list will be sent by the instructor prior to the start of class. Location: Fletcher Cove Community Center. Time Options: 6 Thursdays, 9/5–10/10, 10:30 AM–1:30 PM or 6 Thursdays, 10/24–12/5, 10:30 AM–1:30 PM. No class on 11/28.

Hours: 9 a.m.–5 p.m., Monday–Friday. · By Mail—Complete the registration form using a separate form for each person (forms may be duplicated.) Visa, MasterCard, Discover card, or check payable to MiraCosta College can be used to pay registration fees. If you would like a confirmation, enclose a self-addressed, stamped envelope. Mail checks and completed registration form(s) to: Community Education & Workforce Development, MiraCosta College Technology Career Institute, 2075 Las Palmas Drive, Carlsbad, CA 92011.
