MiraCosta College is honored to celebrate with our first-ever virtual commencement ceremony to be held on Friday, May 22, 2020, at 5 p.m. With obvious differences from a traditional ceremony, the college is committed to recognizing the achievements of our students and we will strive to make the virtual event a memorable one that enables graduates to remotely share this monumental achievement with family, friends, and the academic community. This year's ceremony will include 23 MiraCostans receiving Bachelor’s Degrees in Biomanufacturing. The oldest student petitioning for a degree or certificate will be 76 on commencement day and the youngest is 17. Graduates were mailed a diploma cover and MiraCosta College Alumni pin prior to the virtual ceremony. Students are encouraged to take photos and videos celebrating their hard work and share them on social media using #MCCGrad2020. "MiraCosta College is excited to celebrate the significant achievements of our students. On Friday, we will virtually honor our students, their families, and communities for their accomplishments and share the joy of this moment through the beauty of technology," comments Dr. Sunita Cooke, superintendent/president of MiraCosta College. "We are so proud of the resilience, dedication, and commitment of the class of 2020 during such a time of uncertainty. You inspire us all."
Graduate Celia Ramirez will deliver this year’s commencement address. Ramirez shares how she has overcome challenges in her life to pursue her education. Ramirez credits her father with her commitment to education and for being a role model in her life. He taught her how important it was to be there for your children and the importance of education. She experienced homelessness with her husband and children, but Ramierz persevered, and once the family got back on their feet, she enrolled at MiraCosta College, in pursuit of a better life and a career change. After graduation, Ramierz is excited about her new career in early childhood development. She looks forward to spending more time with her children and also plans to support her husband, as he works toward reaching his goals. She says, “My experience at MiraCosta has had such a huge impact on my life, both academically and personally. It’s a great accomplishment.” For more information about the virtual commencement ceremony, please visit miracosta.edu/commencement.
