Summer Clinical Laboratory High School Intern

The Summer Laboratory Science Program at Tri-City Medical Center offers high school students the opportunity to explore career options and gain experience in the clinical laboratory environment. Clinical laboratory work is different from research work in that a patient’s diagnosis, treatment, and health may be directly dependent upon the laboratory testing results. Our scientists are part of an interdisciplinary team of healthcare professionals dedicated to patients’ health. 

In the laboratory, our scientists work with blood, tissue, and body fluid specimens. They perform tests from the simple to the complex, using manual methods and state-of-the-art instruments, and are responsible for the accuracy of the results they generate. As a Summer Laboratory Science Program participant, you will work in one of our clinical testing laboratories specializing in the areas of hematology, biochemistry, immunology, microbiology, transfusion medicine, or anatomic pathology. You will assist our laboratory personnel in aliquoting, preparing, extracting, and centrifuging biological specimens collected from patients or other duties within the scope of laboratory departments. This program is expected to begin on Tuesday June 24, 2019. Upon completion of internship, a $2,500 Scholarship will be provided. ​

Qualifications

• 18 years of age, required.
• Applicant accepted to a four-year baccalaureate program in human biology, chemistry, clinical laboratory science, microbiology, molecular biology, molecular genetics, or other human biomedical science related field, required.
• You MUST attach an electronic, unofficial copy of your transcript AT THE TIME OF APPLICATION to be considered. GPA 2.75 overall, required.
• Minimum of 1 reference letter from High School Teacher or Counselor addressing student's major strengths, areas for improvement, overall evaluation as compared to other students, organizational skills, laboratory skills, integrity, attendance, communication skills, flexibility, and attitude toward learning new skills, preferred. After the applicant has submitted their application, a Tri-City Medical Center employee will contact the applicant detailing the directions for the reference letter submission.

Education:

• High school diploma or GED in the Carlsbad, Oceanside or Vista School District, required

 
Each intern must pass a physical evaluation, urine drug screen and background checks before starting work.
