![]() State Funding Allows for 50% Tuition Reduction for Many High-Demand, Technology-Focused Career Programs March 16, 2020 – MiraCosta College Technology Career Institute (TCI) is excited to announce it has recruited Chris Ing to facilitate a state pilot program for California community colleges. The $3.5 million dollar funding from California Assembly Bill AB132 is designed to pay students during their internship with local businesses that partner with the College's career institute. Every year more than a thousand community college students from all over the country apply for the prestigious Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship. The Undergraduate Scholarship helps transfer students cover the final two or three years necessary to earn bachelor’s degrees. From this year’s pool of 1,200 applicants from 35 states, five MiraCosta students were selected as semi-finalists for the scholarship.
The new facility will serve as the campus’s arts hub with an art gallery, media arts lab, and display area for student works. The design of MiraCosta’s future new Arts and Media Building at the Oceanside Campus is underway, creating a state-of-the-art hub on campus and bringing together arts programs currently located in multiple buildings.

Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society (PTK) recognized Dr. Sunita “Sunny'' Cooke, Superintendent/President of MiraCosta College with the prestigious honor of the Shirley B. Gordon Award of Distinction. Dr. Cooke will be presented with the award during PTK’s Catalyst 2022, the society’s annual convention in Denver, Colorado, April 7-9, 2022.
The MiraCosta College Board of Trustees elected a new President and Vice President during the regularly scheduled board meeting on Thursday, December 16, 2021. Anna Pedroza will assume the role of president and Frank Merchat as vice president. Board President Pedroza will preside over the Board meetings beginning January 27, 2022.

Grading and other early-phase construction activities are underway for the future new Student Services Building at MiraCosta College. MiraCosta College’s spring 2021 late-start classes begin March 29, with hundreds of classes in a range of subjects, and end at the same time as “regular” courses. Late-start classes are offered days, evenings, weekends, and online. Now is the time to work toward a degree or certificate, get started in the workplace, transfer to a four-year university, enroll for personal enrichment, professional growth, or to gain a new skill.
MiraCosta College’s craft brewing program has been recognized as the only community college certificate program of its kind in California meeting the standards set by the Master Brewers Association of the Americas.
Bidding on contracts for work at MiraCosta College—including work associated with the $455 million, Proposition MM bond measure—just got a lot easier.
An extensive, 18-month renovation of the athletic track and field at MiraCosta’s Oceanside Campus has been completed, replacing an outdated track first built in the early 1980s with a modern walking/jogging track and world-class soccer/rugby and athletics field that meets size requirements for international competitions while providing additional practice space. The renovation also provided for a new, 2,100 square foot Field House with ADA-compliant restrooms, changing rooms, coaches’ offices, team rooms, and equipment storage.

Talk about trial by fire. With the COVID-19 pandemic leading to the closure of libraries and state-of-the-art tutoring centers, MiraCosta College faculty and professional staff were forced to quickly transition their academic support services to online platforms—with nothing less than the educational success of more than 15,000 students hanging in the balance. The MiraCosta College Tutoring & Academic Support Center deftly pivoted to drop-in, one-on-one appointments, in-class help, and student success workshops—all through online platforms. The MiraCosta College Library, in addition to growing its free laptop and mobile hotspot lending program, saw its “Ask A Librarian” staff engage in more than 1,100 online chats with students seeking help with their studies—and that doesn’t include hundreds of additional sessions with non-MiraCosta College librarians available during off hours. The STEM and Math Learning centers, along with the Library and Writing Center, provide online breakout rooms for individual and group study in addition to preview and review sessions for specific courses with expanded hours to cover late nights and weekends. And the Writing Center now offers all of its services on Sunday.
Students and teachers may be engaged in primarily online learning for now, but construction and design activities underway throughout the MiraCosta Community College District are ensuring state-of-the-art facilities are ready when students are able to return to campus.
Three MiraCosta College Board of Trustees, Jacqueline “Jackie” Simon, Frank Merchat, and George McNeil re-elected November 2020, will be sworn in during the regularly scheduled board meeting on Thursday, December 17, 2020, at 4 p.m. Board secretary, MiraCosta College Superintendent/President Dr. Sunny Cooke will administer the oath.

Once you get to know Carlos Carrizosa, it’s easy to understand why he decided to apply to MiraCosta College’s new Social Work and Human Services program. The program that kicked off this fall is unique to the school—MiraCosta is the only community college in California that offers anything like it.

When it comes to the sciences at MiraCosta College, nothing--not even the COVID-19 pandemic--is going to get in the way of student success. Just ask the recipients of more than 3,000 lab kits, containing everything from blood typing chemicals to animal organs for at-home lab work, after their classes were moved online because of pandemic-related campus closures.
