MiraCosta College, in conjunction with the college’s Foundation, Computers 2 Kids, Nordson, and MiraCosta College Associated Student Government (ASG) announced the distribution of critical resources to support MiraCosta College students impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. Items include, but are not limited to, food, technology, and gift cards. On Monday, March 30, from 9 a.m.–1 p.m. the first wave of laptops will be distributed to students in need with additional distribution dates to follow. The MiraCosta College Foundation has the goal to support 1,000 students in need of technology.
Original student choreography is the focal point in this night of beautifully produced dance presented by the MiraCosta College Dance Department and Dave Massey, Artistic Director. On March 11, MiraCosta College will host TECH Talk, a free event presented by the MiraCosta College Computer Studies and Information Technology (CSIT) Department. Students, faculty, community members, and industry leaders are invited to learn about MiraCosta College’s Cybersecurity and IT degrees and certificates, Point Loma Nazarene University’s CIT bachelor’s degree, and network with industry professionals and corporate recruiters representing, cybersecurity, programming, and digital media.
MiraCosta College proudly presents Women Work, an exhibition featuring five women artists from different generations and cultural backgrounds. Through diverse mediums ranging from sculpture, video, and two-dimensional work, Allison Beaudry, Eshrat Erfanian, Anna O’Cain, Griselda Rosas, and Faith Wilding, provide a nuanced view into how women’s voices and their aesthetic expression have evolved over the last 60 years.

The Achieving the Dream Network designates MiraCosta College as a 2019 Leader College. Leader College status is a national designation awarded to Achieving the Dream institutions that have shown intentional and significant progress in improving the success of all community college students. The MiraCosta College Umoja Program presents its 7th Annual Soul Fusion fundraiser, featuring Jazz and Jokes. Hosted by Daran Howard, and featuring music by Big with Donnie Troy and comedy by Gilbert Esquivel. The evening promises to entertain, while providing support for students.

MiraCosta College Congratulates Students Nominated for Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Scholarships1/30/2020
The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation has announced the 2020 Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship semifinalists and MiraCosta College is excited to share that multiple students have been nominated to receive this prestigious scholarship. Semifinalists were chosen from a pool of nearly 1,500 applicants attending 311 community colleges in 45 states and the District of Columbia. With nine nominees, MiraCosta has the most semifinalists from one college in San Diego County.

Late-start classes are offered days, evenings, weekends, and online. Dozens of disadvantaged MiraCosta College students are getting Hewlett Packard desktop computers refurbished and upgraded by members of the Computer Studies and Information Technology Department student club, Club IT, after being discarded by a local business that closed its doors.

Welcome to Seadrift, Texas, a Gulf Coast fishing town where tensions between a burgeoning Vietnamese refugee population clashed violently in a white-dominated community suffering with a struggling economy. On November 15, a new critically-acclaimed documentary aptly titled Seadrift, which was co-produced by MiraCosta College sociology Professor Thao Ha, will be screened at the Oceanside Campus Concert Hall. Ha will discuss the backdrop of what happened in Seadrift before the 68-minute film is shown, and a question-and-answer session will follow. MiraCosta College student Matthew Sheehan is making history. Sheehan, a 26-year-old Marine Corps veteran, is among the first cohort of students taking part in a groundbreaking Northrop Grumman Corporation-led program offering community college students enrolled in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) with paid, work-based learning opportunities and a pathway to qualification for careers in the aerospace and defense industries.

MiraCosta College has secured $1.5 million in state funding to help equip and furnish a new Veterans Center being planned for the Oceanside Campus. A ceremonial check presentation from state Assemblymember Tasha Boerner Horvath, who was instrumental in procuring the $1.5 million, is set for Thursday, November 7, at 1 p.m. on the Oceanside Campus.

Themed around breaking [new] ground, MiraCosta College Superintendent/President Dr. Sunita “Sunny” Cooke outlined student initiatives and released the 2018-19 Annual Report to more than 240 civic leaders, community members, district faculty, staff, and students during her Report to the Region address at the Westin Carlsbad Resort and Spa.
MiraCosta College is launching a new, independently operated, study abroad program with an inaugural trip to Italy in July 2020 that administrators hope will be the first in a series of educational visits around the globe.
